Typically employed across environments that include physician offices, outpatient clinics, health maintenance organizations, and hospitals, students in the 9-month program prepare for entry-level positions where they perform both administrative and clinical duties in various healthcare settings. This program is designed to build a knowledge base of the human body in health and disease along with administrative functions, while blending a mix of classroom instruction with clinical practice and offering an opportunity to participate in an externship.
Students study clinical duties including vital signs measurement, phlebotomy, electrocardiograms (ECGs/EKGs), laboratory procedures, and learn to exhibit communication skills necessary for effective patient interaction and education. Additionally, they apply administrative skills in managing medical records, billing, coding, and scheduling. Students are taught to understand and adhere to ethical and legal standards in healthcare practice while assisting healthcare providers during examinations and minor surgical procedures. By the end of the program graduates will display professionalism and compassion in patient care situations.
