Job Description:
Full-time Yard & Warehouse Crewmember position for a lumber and building materials yard in Union Gap, Washington. For more than 50 years Shuel Wholesale Lumber Co. (Shuel’s Lumber Co.) has provided lumber and building materials to builders, contractors, and D-I-Y customers. Providing personalized, knowledgeable, and friendly customer service is a priority for us. Shuel’s Lumber Co. is looking for a dependable, friendly, energetic personality that can work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Job Summary:
Under direct supervision, this position includes operating a forklift to move product and material throughout the yard as well as a variety of additional yard activities. Responsible to receive materials from vendors, put away, label and track special order materials entering and exiting the yard, stock product, keep yard clean, and pull materials to prepare for delivery or customer will call. Picking and loading duties will be performed using a forklift. This position requires physical strength and dexterity throughout the day along with the ability to follow specific directions and to pay attention to detail. Forklift operation experience is required – this is not a forklift trainable position. Ability to visually identify building materials is a must.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Because we are a busy lumberyard, we often need to quickly switch gears and help where it is needed. Other duties may be assigned as needed. General job duties include the following:
▪ Assist customers in selecting materials. Verify items and quantities purchased. Safely, accurately, courteously load materials into customer’s vehicle
▪ Learn and maintain a strong product knowledge, be familiar with stock on-hand quantities and their location within the lumberyard
▪ Organize, label and store materials in accordance with protocols or management direction
▪ Operate forklift safely and efficiently to load, unload, and move materials in the yard and warehouse. Be able to handle moving of heavy and awkward loads
▪ Perform routine safety check on forklifts according to company guidelines and checklists
▪ Receive and unload vendor deliveries. Check-in materials, review for accuracy, label customer special orders and place materials into inventory
▪ Pull materials, organize, load and secure product on to Shuel’s trucks for delivery. Estimate weight, length and shape of loads for balance, safety and lawful hauling. Review products and quantities to ensure accuracy before leaving the yard
▪ Cover exposed materials, when required, to prevent weather damage
▪ Assist with merchandise returns by re-stocking materials in proper location. Oversee vendor returns according to return authorizations
▪ Maintain product security and accurate inventory over all items leaving the yard
▪ Maintain a positive, professional, safe, healthy and injury-free environment for customers and co-workers. Report any safety hazards to management
▪ Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the yard by keeping ground free of clutter including bands, chocks and trash. Routinely sweep floors, empty trash cans, pull weeds, clean delivery trucks and forklifts, and other duties as assigned
▪ Assist with maintaining inventory, product displays, and pricing labels within the showroom and warehouse. Follow merchandising standards by stocking, facing, straightening, and cleaning or any other task necessary to maintain appearance of products
▪ Safely climb ladders, operate saws and various hand tools while using the correct personal protective equipment (PPE)
▪ Attend safety meetings as required
▪ Participate in materials physical count inventories
▪ Participate in company meetings, training sessions and attend any company after-hours events and/or projects

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
▪ Possess a high school diploma or GED
▪ Able to read, write, understand, communicate and follow instructions in English
▪ Forklift operation experience and OSHA Forklift Certification is required
▪ Knowledge of construction and building materials
▪ Able to learn and gain a strong knowledge of variety of products
▪ Strong organizational skills and attention to detail is required
▪ Able to accurately and completely follow established procedures and processes
▪ Able to tolerate and function effectively in diverse seasonal climate conditions
▪ Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or verbal instructions
▪ Ability to effectively communicate with customers and co-workers
▪ Ability to multi-task and have multiple projects going simultaneously
▪ Ability to give full attention when listening to customer requests and help provide a good solution to their needs
▪ Able to work in a fast-paced environment, think and respond quickly and professionally to constantly changing circumstances
▪ Strong knowledge of basic math. Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
▪ Basic computer skills, adding machine, multi-line phone system, credit card machine
▪ Must successfully complete and pass all company training regarding equipment usage
▪ Use of company-provided personal protective equipment may be required
▪ Meet company driving, licensing and insurance requirements for equipment and vehicles

Supervisory Responsibilities:
There are no supervisory responsibilities with this position

Work Availability:
▪ Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at a level as is determined by management
▪ Must be regularly available and willing to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week or other hours per day or per week as management determines are necessary or desirable to meet business needs
▪ Must be available and willing to work overtime per day or per week as management determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs

▪ Stand, walk, sit and repetitive bending, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting and/or bending
▪ Use both feet and legs to operate equipment along with climbing up and down into cab, twist torso for 360-degree visibility and to operate forklifts and vehicles
▪ Use both hands to finger, handle or feel, write and type; reach, lift, carry, drive and/or operate power tools with hands and arms
▪ Talk and hear; vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus is required
▪ Lift and/or move up to 100lbs on a frequent basis following proper lifting procedures

Work Environment:

▪ Exposed to moving mechanical equipment and vehicles
▪ Exposed to seasonal weather conditions and extreme hot or cold temperatures outside in the yard and in the warehouse
▪ Exposed to moderate to loud noise levels daily
▪ Employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration

Job Type & Classification:
▪ Full-time, 40-hour work week
▪ 8-hour, day shift, Monday – Friday
▪ Available to work overtime as needed
▪ Position will be performed at one location at 2120 S. 2nd Ave-Union Gap, Washington.
Remote work is not available for this role
