The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled Senior Plumber to join the Facilities Maintenance team and help ensure our terminals, maintenance facilities, and support buildings remain safe, reliable, and fully operational. This role provides advanced plumbing expertise that supports the delivery of essential ferry services by maintaining critical infrastructure and responding to facility needs. Working collaboratively with maintenance teams across the organization, this position helps create safe, functional environments for employees and the traveling public. The work performed directly supports WSDOT's mission by providing safe, dependable transportation while advancing our commitment to safety, innovation, leadership, engagement, and sustainability.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Mechanic 3 will:

Inspect, test, and perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on mechanical, plumbing, roofing, electrical, HVAC, fire, security, and building systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Maintain and repair facility infrastructure and equipment, including door hardware, gates, oil/water separators, drinking fountains, exhaust fans, motors, fencing, signage, radio towers, air compressors, and related systems.
Diagnose, troubleshoot, modify, and repair plumbing, drainage, piping, water supply, drain, waste, vent, and compressed air systems to ensure optimal performance.
Read and interpret plans, sketches, and specifications to support facility maintenance, repairs, alterations, and construction projects.
Serve as the senior plumbing specialist by assessing complex plumbing issues and recommending effective maintenance and repair solutions.
Estimate labor, materials, and resource needs for plumbing-related construction, alteration, and repair projects, and provide recommendations to management.
Procure parts and materials in accordance with purchasing guidelines to support facility maintenance and improvement projects.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, material usage, and expenditures using the computerized maintenance management system and complete required documentation in a timely manner.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Technical Expertise:
Proven trade experience in plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair.
Experience of maintenance and repair of basic carpentry, mechanical and electrical systems and devices.
Plan Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications to perform work in accordance with established standards and project requirements.
Computer & Maintenance Management Systems: Experience using computers and facility maintenance software, including email, internet, basic PC applications, and computerized maintenance management systems to document and manage work activities.
Concrete Construction & Repair: Knowledge of and experience performing all phases of concrete work, including installation, maintenance, and repair.
Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
Service-Oriented: Demonstrates a willingness to take action to meet the needs of others.

In addition to all of the above, the following are also required:

Physical Capability & Safety:
Ability to maneuver and transport up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to work safely at heights greater than 50 feet, following established safety protocols.

Flexibility & Reliability:
Ability to adapt to operational needs by working beyond scheduled shifts, responding to emergency call-ins and working with other work groups when business needs arise.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Journey-Level Plumbing Expertise: Possession of a Washington State Journey Level Plumbing License (PL01) is preferred and demonstrates advanced knowledge of plumbing systems, installation, maintenance, and repair.

Important Notes

This position is not eligible for remote work.
The salary range listed includes the 2% general wage increase, effective on July 1, 2026.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
