The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking two skilled and motivated Maintenance Mechanics to join our teams in Clarkston and Prosser, Washington. In this vital role, you will help keep Washington's transportation system safe, reliable, and operational by performing a wide range of facility and highway maintenance activities that directly support the traveling public. As a Maintenance Mechanic 3, you will apply advanced trade skills to perform complex repairs, preventative maintenance, and improvements to agency facilities, buildings, and rest areas throughout the region. This position plays a key role in maintaining safe, functional, and well-maintained infrastructure that supports WSDOT's mission and operations.

Beyond facility maintenance, you will contribute to critical highway maintenance activities and serve as an essential member of the region's winter operations team, helping ensure roadways remain safe and accessible during challenging weather conditions. This position offers the opportunity to work on diverse projects, solve complex maintenance challenges, and make a meaningful impact on the safety and mobility of communities across Washington State.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Mechanic 3 will:
Maintain, remodel, and repair maintenance facilities in the South Central Region.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all facility buildings.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on buildings and structures.
Corrective maintenance on buildings and structures.
Repair and remodels buildings; frames walls, rafters and roofs; hangs and tapes drywall; finishes, paints interior and exterior finishes; installs countertops, builds custom fit cabinets, desks, bookcases, worktables and benches, and hangs doors.
Install and maintain plumbing, electrical, and mechanical fixtures; installs, maintains, and repairs pipes, valves, drains, basins, faucets, lavatories, air conditioning units, gates, hydrants and concrete work.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Building Maintenance & Repair: Demonstrated journey-level expertise in one or more construction trade, with experience to include one or more of the following: drywall, framing, siding, minor plumbing, HVAC, minor electrical work, concrete, and carpentry. Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to structures and roadside features.
Highway and Roadway Maintenance: Demonstrated entry-level experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure including pavement repair, vegetation management, sign and guardrail repair and installation, debris removal.
Heavy Equipment Operations: Knowledge of safe operation of heavy equipment (e.g. front-end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoe, vactor, 26,000 -56,000 GVW Dump truck with snowplow and chemical deicer attachments)
Licensing & Certification Required Within One Year of Appointment: Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement and without airbrakes restriction, Valid CDL Medical card, Washington State Flagging Card, First Aid Certification
Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Ability to use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating. Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication. Demonstrated ability to write estimates and draw plans. Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for compliance with established standards and regulations.
Physical Work Capacity and Material Handling: Ability to safely perform physically demanding maintenance activities, including carrying, transporting, and maneuvering materials, supplies, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in a variety of work environments and weather conditions.
Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:
Policy Interpretation and Operational Compliance: Demonstrated ability to interpret, understand, and apply plans, policies, procedures, and technical guidance in daily work activities to ensure compliance, consistency, and effective operational outcomes.

This position is not eligible for remote work.
In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 2% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2026, upon legislative approval.
Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and often near moving traffic and heavy equipment, requiring heightened situational awareness and strict adherence to safety practices. Employees must wear appropriate PPE at all times.
