Women in Trades: Q&A with Ryane

October 12, 2017

Ryane Holmes, graduate of Perry Tech's Instrumentation & Industrial Automation Technology program, answers some of the most-asked questions from potential students:

Why did you choose the Instrumentation Program at Perry Tech?

I was told that the Instrumentation program is one of the best in the country and that the career opportunities are amazing.

What was your experience going through the program?

My experience in the program was great and challenging. I gained so much knowledge and skills that I never thought I would have.

Were there obstacles you had to overcome while in school?

The biggest obstacle was being able to support myself and pay for tuition while going to school. I had two jobs working just under 40 hours a week while keeping a 3.7 GPA.

What was it like studying to be a woman in your trade?

Being one of very few females in my program, I feel like I have something to prove because I want the men in my class to acknowledge that I can be just as good.

How did Perry Tech prepare you for success after graduation?

I feel like Perry did everything in their power to help me to be successful after graduation ranging from helping with my resume and cover letter and mock interviews all the way to bringing in employers ready to hire. I also felt very confident in the knowledge and skill set I developed over those two years.

What were some of your favorite memories at Perry?

One memory that comes to mind is when I became president of ISA (International Society of Automation) for my program. I didn’t think I would win because I was running against older boys but I did! I also served a second term as ISA president.

Anything else you’d like to tell other women considering going into a non-traditional trade?

I would recommend the Instrumentation program to anybody who wants a promising and challenging career. I would also like to encourage young women to go through the program, we need more! This field is too promising to let the boys have all the fun.
