SkillsUSA State Championships Hosted by Perry Tech

April 28, 2017

Yakima, WA – April 28, 2017 – The SkillsUSA State Championships took place in Yakima this year, with many events hosted at Perry Technical Institute.  The competition gave high school students a chance to showcase their talents in career and technical education. Contestants from across Washington gathered in a central location, competing in categories covering everything from welding and carpentry, to 3-D animation and broadcasting. Events were hosted at Perry Technical Institute, Yakima Public Schools and the Yakima Convention Center over the course of three days.

SkillsUSA contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. The organization aims to improve the quality of America’s skilled workforce through a structured program of citizenship, leadership, employability, technical and professional skills training. First place winners received a scholarship to Perry Technical Institute and are also invited to the 53rd annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in Louisville, Kentucky June 19-23, 2017.

“I continue to be so impressed with our students.” Said Terri Lufkin, Executive Director of SkillsUSA Washington. “When I travel across the state and to Kentucky for NLSC I continually hear what amazing students we have.”

The Perry Tech events were hosted in our Automotive, Electrical, HVAC/R, Instrumentation, ITCS, Machine, and Welding departments. We hosted over 130 competitors from 20 different school districts.  There were also a number tours for high school teachers and parents throughout the Perry Tech buildings during the event, with many students expressing interest to attend PTI in the future.
