MA certification rates surpass national average

When Medical Assisting students enroll at Perry Tech, they are making an investment with their education. We want to make the most of that investment and set students up for success. For Medical Assisting students, this requires more than completing the program, it also means successfully passing a National Certification
exam. The certification exam is taken during 4th quarter, before they leave for a mandatory externship. According to the American Medical Technologists certification agency, the Registered Medical Assistant exam is a demanding test with less than a 81% national pass rate. Perry Tech MA students are exceeding this rate by
passing it at an impressive 98%.

What is Perry’s key to success? Incorporating the test into Perry Tech’s one-year program. “Most medical assistant programs do not require their students to sit for one of these national exams as part of their curriculum, but PTI does,” says Cheryl Johnson, Registered Nurse and Medical Assisting instructor. “Most states in the nation require that a Medical Assistant pass an accredited training program, like ours, and pass a national certification exam in order to practice in the field.” Following Perry Tech’s model of preparing students to go to work, it makes sense that students are required to take the exam. While students are not required to pass the test to graduate, the numbers speak for themselves. As an added incentive, the Perry Tech Foundation will reimburse students in good standing for that the cost of the exam if passed while they are students.

Dr. Carl Olden is a local physician and member of Perry Tech’s Program Advisory Committee. “Perry students have a much broader range of skills, a strong work ethic, and are already team-oriented,” he says. “They hit the ground running. It is a huge plus for MA students to complete their national certification prior to graduation as it makes Perry MA students eligible for hiring right away.” Recent graduates say they’re thankful for the experience. “Perry helped me succeed by setting up the foundation to get me started in a career,” says Margarita Roman, a recent graduate of the Medical Assisting program. “It wasn’t just something that got me any old job. It was something that I needed to work for. And Perry set everything up for me. All I had to do was get through it. It gave me a new life.”
