Construction graduate reflects on the home build journey

October 25, 2018

Yakima, WA – October 26, 2018 – Thomas Dahl graduated from the Perry Tech Construction program just last month in September. During his time at Perry Tech, He earned the Student Achievement Award, helped build the Habitat for Humanity home featured in the 2018 Tour of Homes (read more here), and now works for C Talbot Construction in Naches, WA. He shares more about his experience building the Habitat home from the ground up over the past year:

The Habitat for Humanity house had a great impact on me personally. The framing of the house felt symbolic. When you put up a wall, the whole team has to pick it up. It’s so heavy and significant. We got a good feeling that created the real vision in my mind of what we were doing. Once we actually lifted those walls up, it hit me— this family is really going to have a home.
During the Perry Tech volunteer days, I felt like my confidence grew as I taught faculty and staff how to help in different ways. It was fun and made me feel important. I knew what we were doing is making a difference. The family who will be moving into the Habitat home stops by once and awhile, they like to come by the house to visit us. They’re all so nice and polite. The kids are funny and cute.
It’s pretty cool for us to be a part of something like this. We were honored to be a part of the regional “Tour of Homes” in September, where we got to present how we used our skills to help others. It feels really good to represent a construction program that values community service. It’s rewarding and a great honor.
