New Perry Tech Plumbing Technician Program

January 04, 2018

Yakima, WA – January 4, 2018 – Perry Technical Institute’s new Plumbing Technician program is set to launch in September of this year. The school met with industry leaders throughout 2017 to lay the foundation for the program, and received overwhelming support.

“It’s a fast growing economy, so the availability for employment is really, really high right now,” explained Ryan McNett, Owner and General Manager of Apex Plumbing in Yakima. “There’s something different every day, there’s a lot of different facets to plumbing, and a lot of different areas we need employees.”

“They have a great opportunity to work in an industry that’s growing,” said McNett. “The economy is growing, and plumbing has a lot of work with higher paid wages.” McNett is serving on Perry Tech’s Plumbing Program Advisory Committee, working alongside other industry professionals on the development of the program.

Perry Technical Institute’s Plumbing Technician program is designed to fast-track a successful career in the industry. In one year it offers students a diversified curriculum that guides them through the process of becoming a plumbing technician. A class of 20 students will cover subjects such as plumbing fundamentals, mathematics, blueprint reading, waste systems, water supply systems, finish and advanced plumbing. It will also aim to create leaders in the field by focusing on professional development and the student’s externship.

Students will spend 12 months studying and applying safety, fittings, power tools, drains, backflow, venting, and water distribution systems. Training will include the installation of piping, fixtures, valves, water heaters, and professional development for the plumbing industry. The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) will be used and applied throughout the program. The first graduating class for the program is set to receive their diplomas September 2019.

“It’s going to be an exciting program,” said Associate Dean of Education Jason Lamiquiz. “There’s going to be a lot of classroom, lab and hands on work.”

The Plumbing Technician Program will be the 13th program at Perry Technical Institute. Currently the school offers 12 training programs that can be completed in one to two years.
