The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Highway Maintenance Workers to join Eastern Region's Pavement Preservation and Striping Crews located in Spokane, WA. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, these positions are responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. These positions perform a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. Working in the maintenance area requires responsible, safety-minded individuals to accomplish assigned tasks. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington.

What to Expect
This recruitment is being used to fill one vacancy on the regional Pavement Preservation Crew and one vacancy on the regional Striping Crew. The Pavement position requires out of town work throughout the summer season to accommodate job requirements and accomplish mission goals.

The Striping position requires a substantial amount of time spent on the road and out of town, 6 to 7 weeks in several different locations. This will require 4 nights out on a 5 – 8-hour day schedule and 3 nights out on a 4 – 10-hour day schedule, increasing to weeks with 4 nights out on a 5/10 schedule when workload requires it.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
Pavement Preservation Crew

Perform general roadway maintenance activities such as:
Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
Erosion and slide repair.
Sign maintenance and repair.
Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.

Striping Crew
Perform all aspects of striping operations to maintain all the paint striping and pavement markings throughout Eastern Region such as:
Drive support truck for striper.
Operate edge line gun on striper.
Pre-mark and run Hydra-Boom on supply truck.
Measure and track supplies.
Assist in field layout and marking of roadways and in paint and bead gun field repairs and striper clean up.

Job Duties Performed by both Crews
Track, document, and report daily work activities.
Vegetation control, such as mowing or spraying.
Highway debris removal, including danger tree removal.
Safely operate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, B and C equipment including trucks up to 54,000 GVW equipped with various maintenance attachments.
Perform winter snow and ice removal, which includes operating dump trucks and sanders, as well as hauling sand and gravel.
Perform traffic control, which includes manually flagging traffic or signing for lane closures and operating attenuator/buffer truck.
Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools which includes sharpening power saws and chains, washing vehicles, and greasing tools and equipment, etc.
Act as a first responder to accident scene, spills, and other emergency situations.
Lead and train others in the absence of the Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
Effectively use radio, phone, computers, and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
Navigate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings.

Qualifications
These are Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) positions. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the positions at a lower level, Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1), depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

To be considered for this opportunity at the HMW1 level, the following is required:
One year of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent.

To be considered for this opportunity at the HMW2 level, the following is required:
Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent.

In addition, candidates at either level will have:
Possession of a Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions or acquire within 12 months of hire.
Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card, within 6 months of hire.
A high-level of awareness and attention to safety.
Ability to travel throughout the region to perform work.
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
Ability to operate heavy equipment, and hand and power tools.
Ability to negotiate rough, steep terrain and work in all weather conditions.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.

Important Notes
This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
These positions are not eligible for remote work.
The Paving position requires out of town work throughout the summer season to accommodate job requirements and accomplish mission goals.
The Striping position requires overnight travel for the striping operations.
These are Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) positions. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the positions at a lower level, Highway Maintenance Worker 1(HMW1), depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

HMW1: $45,552 – $55,224
HMW2: $51,384 – $62,568

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
