The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a journey- level system administrator to fill a vacancy on the Olympic Region Traffic Management Center (TMC) team working out of Tacoma, WA. The ITS Engineer will be responsible for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Information Technology (IT) systems security and technical support to ensure TMC functionality. This includes independently providing professional independent consultation and specialized analysis for ITS design, networking, development, installation, maintenance, programming, testing, quality assurance, training, troubleshooting and/or problem resolution for the ITS in the TMC. A secondary function of this position is to support the region IT Office for duties such as workstation support, premise cabling, documentation, and inventory as necessary to support the overall system. The position works with Headquarters (HQ) Traffic Operations on special projects and new products development, modification, and testing.

This position is key in achieving agency traffic management mission and goals. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the ITS Engineer will:

Install, maintain and integrate systems and technologies for TMC use.
Integrate, distribute, maintain, design and support the TMC servers, ITS RuggedCom and CISCO network and interfaces, and application environment for 24/7 operation.
Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures for workstations, servers, ITS network, application environment, systems, and equipment.
Provide technical advice to a variety of internal and external partners, including but not limited to, HQ Traffic Operations Division, HQ Office of Information Technology, other Regions, WSP, and Olympic Region Traffic Office, ITS Maintenance Group, and Region IT Office.
Ensure that TMC operational needs relative to required systems engineering processes, contract plan development, and implementing emerging best practices are met.


The core business hours for the TMC are during the peak commute hours Monday through Friday. This position's schedule can be flexible to meet the needs of the organization. Position is telework eligible based on business needs. Must be able to work alternate and emergency shifts as assigned, as well as respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed. Work long hours, including some night and weekend work. Occasional standby and call-back will be required.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Bachelor’s degree in an Information Technology field from an accredited vocational training program.

OR

Five (5) years of experience in network administration or equivalent combination of education and experience. AND Five (5) years of experience in civil/traffic engineering to include knowledge of ITS systems implementation and operation.


In addition to one of the above, the following are also required:

Knowledge of PC and PC peripheral hardware and software architecture and operational theory.
Knowledge of Microsoft Operating systems, applications, management and technical tools, and commonly used WSDOT TMC operations applications/central system software/WSDOT web-based applications.
Ability to perform at a journey level:
Configure and implement the installation of Operating systems and current software/hardware platform utilizing preferred WSDOT tools and methodology.
Design, install, maintain, troubleshoot, resolve problems, and consult for complex systems, projects, or operational problems that impact the department.
Independently identify and resolve both basic and advanced problems.
Analyze, diagnose, and correct workstation, server, network, hardware, and software application problems.
Design, install, maintain, and troubleshoot low-voltage premise wiring.
Specify, acquire, and assemble PC hardware, software, or peripherals to meet the departments complex business system needs.
Analyze, review, research product trends, developments, and compatibilities to promote departments goals and adherence to applicable standards.
Valid driver’s license to operate assigned state vehicle to and from roadside work sites.
Ability to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Ability to install/remove computer equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.


It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have:

Network Administration Certification (CISCO, RuggedCom, Digi).
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
Low Voltage Electrical License.
Five (5) years of experience in electronics, software integration, and communications systems such as fiber optics, microwave and telecommunications.
Customer Service or Support Services experience.
