The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (In-Training) to join our regional maintenance organization. This journey-level position, under the direction of an HMW 3, plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of highway transportation. Responsibilities include operating various equipment and tools, performing skilled maintenance tasks, and occasionally leading a crew. The ideal candidate will contribute to fostering a respectful work environment with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, in alignment with WSDOT's mission of improving communities and economic vitality through transportation.

What to Expect
This position covers the night shift. The employee must be able to report to a duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call and respond to emergencies in all weather conditions.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

Operate equipment and power tools and perform manual labor for asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance, drainage repair, guardrail installation, and vegetation management.
Conduct routine inspections of highway features and document work activities using electronic devices.
Transport heavy equipment and materials between work sites using ergonomic techniques.
Assist in assembling, installing, and replacing signs and sign components.
Maintain equipment and perform snow and ice removal during winter conditions.
Respond to emergency situations by setting up traffic control, acting as an incident responder, and coordinating responses with external agencies.
Plan and carry out safety plans, participate in safety meetings, and ensure safe operations of work duties.
Assist in the cleanup and removal of roadway debris and homeless encampments.
Lead and train others in the absence of the Highway Maintenance Worker 3, including planning work activities and providing equipment instruction and training.


Qualifications
This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level, depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

At the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, the following is required:

One (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities or equivalent. Education from a trade school may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Must obtain Washington State CDL Class A driver’s license with endorsement “N” and without air brake restriction and no transmission restrictions within 12 months of employment.


At the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following is required:

High school graduation or GED.
Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience.

OR

One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.

AND

Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver’s license with endorsement “N” and without air brake restriction, with a valid medical card.


In addition to the following (applies to both levels):

Ability to work weekends, holidays, alternate shifts, and more than 40 hours per week as needed. Must report to a duty station within 60 minutes of the after-hours call and respond to emergencies in all weather conditions, 24/7.
Ability to work long hours outdoors in various weather conditions, day or night, navigating rough terrain and working at heights above 25 ft. over water or land. One must also be able to manipulate up to 50 lbs. safely. The work may expose one to hazardous materials and conditions, such as sharp objects and bloodborne pathogens. The work environment may also include hot temperatures and exposure to hot asphalt up to 350 degrees.
Ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.
Ability to operate heavy equipment and hand and power tools.


It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have the following:

Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card
Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License
Backflow Prevention Tester Certification
Crane Certificate


Important Notes

This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
The position is also eligible for an additional $2.00 per hour for Night Shift Designated Corridor Premium pay.
The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 10% Group C premium for HMW positions located in Everett, WA, Snohomish County.
The work schedule for this position is typically four 10-hour shifts from Tuesday to Friday.
Depending on qualifications, this position can be filled at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 - 2 levels:
Highway Maintenance Worker 1 - annual salary range: $50,107 - $60,746.
Highway Maintenance Worker 2 - annual salary range: $56,522 - $68,824.
This position is not eligible for remote work.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
