Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. There are over 400 sailings each day on 10 ferry routes. WSF transports nearly 17 million passengers a year and has more than 1,800 employees. Employees perform a variety of duties on vessels, in terminals, at the maintenance facility, and at the Seattle headquarters.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Shipwright Carpenter to perform work on Vessels and Terminals, commercial buildings, and docks/piling work. In this position, you will construct staging, shoring, temporary supports, stairways, ladders, and other wooden structures on Vessels, and Terminals. You will also construct, alter, remodel, and repair Terminal building additions, passenger waiting areas, offices, storage buildings, fencing, railings, barriers, decking, concrete, traffic arms, and other terminal buildings from blueprints, plans, or sketches.

This position provides support to other shops with wood cribbing, crating, and cover-up.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

Install, repair, patch, size, and replace various flooring and decking applications.
Replace and or repair ceiling tiles.
Glaze, repair, remove, and install windows and mirrors on vessels and terminals.
Perform millwork, fairing compounds, vinyl/rubber, plastic laminate, fiberglass, wall coverings, and general caulking, rigging, and repair.
Replace wire rope cables.
Repair roofing, plastic gutters, and downspouts.
Work safely at heights, and over water using, ladders, staging, man-lifts, scissor-lifts, and catwalks.
Construct cabinets, shelving, shipping crates, boxes, and cribbing.


Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Valid State Driver’s License.
Transportation Worker’s Identification Credential (TWIC) within 90 days of hire.
Respiratory questionnaire as required by the regulatory authority, and annual fit test, which may include the requirement to have if necessary to obtain a skin-to-rubber seal.
Journey Level status as a Shipwright/Carpenter.

OR

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Shipwright or Carpenter.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Previous maritime experience working on vessels or shipping terminals. US Navy or US Coast Guard is acceptable as experience.
Experience building working platforms or scaffolding.
