The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Maintenance Mechanic 3 to join the Area 3 Maintenance team in Ritzville, WA. The Maintenance Mechanic 3 will provide support for seven rest areas in the Eastern Region and perform routine and preventive building maintenance, grounds-keeping, and plumbing for each facility. This position will work with the supervisor for electrical issues within the structures and grounds, determine maintenance needs, and schedule services with outside vendors. You will assist the supervisor in assignment of personnel and equipment, and be responsible for leading work crews in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of building systems and grounds-keeping.

What to Expect
The typical schedule is Tuesday through Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Availability for callout, overtime, and work on weekends and evenings is required. Travel requirements include travel within the area and region, including many counties, on a daily basis. This position may work and stay out of town overnight to accomplish work.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment to determine need for maintenance and repair.
Install, repair, trouble shoot, and perform preventative maintenance on plumbing (supply and waste).
Perform backflow testing repairs and replacements, landscape maintenance, landscape irrigation maintenance, vegetation control and lawn mowing.
Perform building maintenance, painting, concrete maintenance and repair, flooring repair and replacement, drywall, framing and tile repairs, and door repair and replacement.
Submit required water samples to appropriate agencies.
Perform diagnostics, maintenance, replacement, and preventive maintenance of water supply well systems and small motors/pumps integral to this system.
Perform snow and ice removal at rest areas and corresponding rest area grounds.
Cleaning and other custodial duties as needed to maintain rest area rest rooms and surrounding areas.

Qualifications
This is a Maintenance Mechanic 3 position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (Maintenance Mechanic 2), depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

At the Maintenance Mechanic 2 level, the following are required:
One (1) year of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work, irrigation and plumbing repair work.
First aid card or obtain within first six months of hire date.
A valid drivers license.

At the Maintenance Mechanic 3level, the following are required:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in a skilled mechanic trade and one (1) year of experience as a journey-level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work (Experience may be substituted for the apprenticeship program on a year for year basis, but at least one year of experience as a journey level worker is required).
Washington State Department of Health backflow certification or ability to obtain certification within 8 months of hire date.
First aid card or obtain within 6 months of hire date.
A valid driver's license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
Journey-level plumbing-documented experience including experience with installing and maintaining commercial plumbing fixtures, water delivery components, water metering and protection devices, water conditioning systems and similar equipment.
Journey-level carpentry- documented experience in installing and maintaining door and window hardware in wood, steel and aluminum doors and windows.
Experience with municipal well systems.

This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Maintenance Mechanic field and achieve the goal class of a Maintenance Mechanic 3. Candidates will be considered as a Maintenance Mechanic 2 or 3, depending on their qualifications. The salary levels for each are:
Maintenance Mechanic 2: $55,224- $64,092 annually.
Maintenance Mechanic 3: $59,616- $69,072 annually.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
This position includes travel within the area and region, including many counties, on a daily basis. This position may work and stay out of town overnight to accomplish work.
