The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two Transportation Technicians to join the Field Exploration Services Unit as Geotechnical Drillers/Helpers. These are in-training opportunities. Duties will require highly physical, manual labor. At the Transportation Technician 1 and 2 levels, the incumbent will assist the driller and drilling inspector in advancing geotechnical borings, performing in situ testing, installing instrumentation in the borings, and designing various types of work safety zones. At the Transportation Technician 3 level, the incumbent will work as skilled journey-level technician performing geotechnical field exploration testing and sampling as a driller/helper for the State Geotechnical Office on a statewide basis, while continuing to design and maintain various types of work safety zones.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Geotechnical Driller/Helper will:

Conduct subsurface testing and sampling.
Design, set up, and maintain work safety zones.
Advance test borings with a variety of test drilling equipment and methods, conducting standard in situ testing.
Set up work zone safety signage and delineation, equipment, and communication protocols.
Install geotechnical monitoring instrumentation.
Decommission geotechnical instrumentation in accordance with accepted Department of Ecology (DOE) practices.
Operate the electric cone penetrometer and seismic cone penetrometer.
Maintain testing equipment.
Transport testing, sampling, and support equipment.
Make “on site” moves of testing equipment to test hole locations.
Maintains daily records.

Qualifications
This is a Transportation Technician 3 (TT3) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (TT1 or TT2) depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

To be considered at the Transportation Technician 1 level, the following are required:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
A valid driver’s license.
Flagger Training with certification within 45 days of hire.

To be considered at the Transportation Technician 2 level, the following are required:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
A valid CDL driver’s license (class A) with (N) endorsement and without air brake restriction.
A valid Washington State DOE Resource Protection Training License.
Flagger Training with certification.

To be considered at the Transportation Technician 3 level, the following are required:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
A valid CDL driver’s license (Class A) with (N) endorsement and without air brake restriction.
A valid Washington State DOE Resource Protection license.
Two (2) years of experience performing work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent.
Completion of 24- or 40-hour Hazwoper Training.
Flagger Training with certification.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Mechanical and fabrication experience.
Experience working on a drill crew, and/or working in the field.
Experience working out of town for extended periods of time.
First aid and CPR training.
Flagger training with certification.

Important Notes
This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
This position requires performing hands-on work while exposed to hazardous conditions or materials, and traffic, including traffic at a field site, along a roadway, at a construction site, or in a warehouse.
This position requires performing manual labor and the ability to manipulate 50-100 lbs from waist to above head: drill casing, rods and other required supplies and tooling from the support truck to the drill site.
This position requires the individual to do repetitive turning and twisting of drill tools in many positions, including overhead, using hand tools such as 36-inch pipe wrenches in jerking and pulling motions, pulling water supply line from support truck to the drill site.
Must be able to operate pickups and Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMA).
The standard work schedule is four 10-hour days, but incumbent may work up to 11-day shifts due to workloads or time requirements.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
These are in-training positions that offer a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship. These positions allow you to progress upward through the Transportation Technician series and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Technician 3. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Technician 1, 2, or 3 level, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:
Transportation Technician 1: $43,428 - $58,104
Transportation Technician 2: $52,620 - $70,800
Transportation Technician 3: $59,616 - $80,112
