The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill our Highway Maintenance Worker 2 In-Training position for our North Central Region in Tonasket, WA. This journey-level position is a member of the regional maintenance organization. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt, synthetic materials.
Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches; erosion and slide repair; sign maintenance and repair; guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
Danger tree removal; establish, maintain, and repair landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites.
Haul materials such as rip rap, hot and cold asphalt.
Remove litter on state right-of-way; remove animal remains and debris from roadways.
Track, document, and report daily work activities.
Account for inventory and inventories highway section.
Perform snow and ice control, load trucks from stockpiles or pits.
Maintain stockpile.


Qualifications
This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, depending on qualifications, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at the lower level (HMW1), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

To be considered for the HMW1 you must also have:

A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medical card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.
Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
The ability to maneuver/lift and/or transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.

To be considered for the HMW2 you must also have:

A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medical card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.
Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
The ability to lift and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate.
Washington Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction.
Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.
Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.


Important Notes

Must be able to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
Typical schedule is Monday-Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
