The Opportunity
WSDOT has an exciting career opportunity for an experienced trades professional who loves working outdoors and embraces challenges. The South Central Region is seeking to fill a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 vacancy located in Union Gap, WA. This experienced specialist must have a commitment to safety while assisting in preventative and general maintenance, repair, and inspection of bridges, structures, and highways throughout the region. The individual in this role will operate a wide variety of bridge maintenance equipment/tools, and perform journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, operation, and reconstruction of bridges within the Region. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of goods, services, and people.
What to Expect
This position is required to perform work that is often physical in nature, primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic. Work performed may be at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water, and/or in a confined environment.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
Perform journey level maintenance and repairs to concrete bridges, decks, joints, girders, post tensioning cables, soffits, piers, and columns.
Build forms, tie rebar, mix, pour and finish concrete.
Fall trees and cut brush from around bridge superstructure, columns, and abutments.
Perform journey level maintenance and repairs to timber bridge decks, girders, X-braces, caps, piles, wheel rail, sidewalks, and handrails.
Repair and/or replace guardrails.
Maintain and repair WSDOT facilities.
Design and set up traffic control for operations; perform traffic control such as manually flag traffic or signing for lane closures, road closures and detours.
Conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.
Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
Coordinate traffic control and responses with external agencies.
Use rigging, staging, static lines, fall arrest harness and lanyards to be compliant with OSHA, and WISHA standards to complete work safely at heights.
Qualifications
This is a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 (BMS2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (BMS1) depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
To be considered at the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 1 level, the following are required:
One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent.
To be considered at the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 level, at least one (1) of the following are required:
Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, or experience in the construction field which includes carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, electrical, heavy equipment operations, millwright, or closely related experience. OR
High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1. OR
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
In addition to one of the above, the following are also required.
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction OR the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. (Agency may assist with obtaining)
A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD; including planning, setting signs, and cones or barrels and flagging, OR the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Possess a commitment to workplace safety and proper use of personal protective equipment.
Possess strong journey level skills with the ability to contribute to a tea4m effort in a cooperative and collaborative manner to complete bridge repair tasks.
Knowledge and ability to use a computer for time management, email, word documents, schedules, etc.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Journey level experience in one of the heavy construction trades with focus on carpentry, welding, and/or steel fabrication.
Important Notes
This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
This position requires up to 80% of work out of town within Region to include overnight stays on per diem.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 level, however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 1, if not qualified at the highest level. The salaries for each level are below:
BMS2: $61,056 – $70,800 Annually
BMS1: $56,676 – $65,748 Annually
This position is not eligible for remote work.
