The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Equipment Technician 3 to work with the Olympic Region Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) to provide well maintained vehicles and equipment to customers who in turn may accomplish their services to the public in a safe, efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner. Under the supervision of the Equipment Technician Supervisor, this role is responsible for performing a full range of journey-level maintenance and repair activities, diagnostic procedures, and fabrication activities on all types of equipment utilized by the department; this includes heavy (greater than 26,000 GVW) and construction (on- and off-road) vehicles and equipment within the Olympic Region’s area of responsibility.

What to Expect
Core business hours are from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. Work alternates and emergency shifts as situations dictate, as well as respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed. Occasional standby and call-back may be required.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician 3 will:

Inspect, diagnose, disassemble and reassemble, install all related parts and components, design, and make needed repairs to various systems that are found on WSDOT’s heavy equipment fleet.
Troubleshoot, repair, and replace heavy equipment fleet electrical systems.
Overhaul, replace, and rebuild all types diesel and gasoline engines.
Utilize digital MultiMate and scanning tools to diagnose and repair systems.
Perform preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment in WSDOT’s heavy equipment fleet; perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments.
Perform seasonal checkups, steam cleaning and washing, as well as major and minor tune-ups and adjustments.
Perform machinist, body and glass repair, and welding fabrication work; fabricate brackets, attachments, and specialized equipment attachments.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, at least one (1) of the following are required:
Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic. NOTE: Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding, may substitute year for year for up to two (2) years of experience. OR-
One (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment. OR-
Journey-level standing as a heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship. OR-
Journey-level standing as recognized by a labor union.

In addition to one of the above, the following are also required:
Possession of a Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement, without airbrake restrictions (required within six (6) months of hire, training may be provided).
Supply basic hand tools.
Ability to transport, move, lift and manipulate various types of test gear and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to traverse slopes and declines.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
Currently possess a valid Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
Experience using equipment management systems, such as Fleet Equipment Management System (FEMS).
An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in automotive or light/heavy equipment repair.
Two (2) year degree in Automotive Technology or Diesel Technology.
Three (3) years’ experience in the automotive repair industry.

The salary listed includes the legislative approved 20% assignment pay.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
