The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill non-permanent Traffic Safety Systems Operator 1 positions in Union Gap, WA. These positions will provide assistance, support, and communications to field crews and the traveling public to promote safe travel on state highways in Central Washington. These positions will monitor and operate intelligent transportation systems and devices such as roadside cameras, variable message signs (VMS), and highway advisory radios (HAR). Traffic and incident information collected is then passed on to motorists, response agencies, and the media. By keeping travelers informed, the Traffic Safety Systems Officer increases the efficiency and safety of traveling public.
What to Expect
These positions are temporary on-call positions. They require a flexible individual who can be available to work a variety of shifts to include day, swing, night, weekends, and holidays, sometimes with little notice to assist in the 24/7 operations of the Traffic Management Center.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
In the absence of the supervisor, assume responsibility for the operation of the radio and electronic communications systems.
Receive, record, evaluate, and broadcast reports of collisions, traffic hazards, disabled vehicles, and complaints; initiate appropriate actions and keep command personnel informed.
Review records and monitor available information sources (traffic cameras, radio, telephone, email, television, internet) to recognize and track incidents.
Operate computer enhanced information systems.
Monitor and update the Highway Advisory Radio (HAR), Variable Message Sign (VMS), and Information/Speed Limit (ISL) computer systems.
Disseminate real-time traveler information relative to weather, traffic conditions, road closures, and pass restrictions.
Alert maintenance personnel, law enforcement, and other agencies to receive and disseminate emergency information and potential hazards.
Operate a personal computer workstation utilizing engineering, computing, and word processing.
Record and maintain clear and accurate records of all dispatches and field personnel location and status reports.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
One (1) year of proven experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously under challenging deadlines.
One (1) year of experience using electronic equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
One (1) year of experience working independently and prioritizing workload.
Valid Driver’s License.
Ability to report to the Union Gap TMC within 60 minutes.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Ability to type 30 words per minute with 95% accuracy.

This is a non-permanent opportunity, expected to last 12 months.
Positions vary due to On-Call status. The work schedule varies with both day shift and night shift availability as the TMC is staffed 24 hours per day and seven days per week. Weekends and holidays may be required to fill 24/7 scheduled shifts.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
