The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking Highway Maintenance Worker 2 for our North Central Region. This journey-level position is a member of the regional maintenance organization tasked with working with and assisting other WSDOT work groups. This position may be situationally assigned to work with and under a number of different work group structures depending on needs of the region on a day-to-day basis. This position performs a variety of skilled highway maintenance tasks while maintaining personal, co-worker and public safety as a primary objective in the planning and performance of all work assignments. The position is responsible for maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, overpasses, and other highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role you will:

Set signs and other traffic control devices.
Participate in mobile operation traffic control situations or as a buffer vehicle.
Load or unload materials, shovel, carry objects, hold equipment or tools.
Install, apply, or layout of highway pavement markings. Pavement repair and maintenance.
Install guardrails and maintenance, drainage maintenance and repair of the directional, regulatory, and warning signs, removal of animal remains and roadway debris, debris swapping and cleaning.
Removal of brush, trees, and other roadway obstructions.
Coordinate with WSP, other emergency responders.
Incident Response: Expedite clearance of accidents, abandoned vehicles, and work toward clearing incidents within 90 minutes.
Coordinate with WSP, WSDOT Maintenance and Ecology for cleanup and removal of motor vehicle fluids and hazardous materials which may impact surface water or cause substantial harm to the environment. Continuously patrol the highway.

Qualifications
To be considered for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) you must also have:
A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A without restrictions with endorsement N within 12 months of hiring. WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, or other truck driving, or Traffic Incident management, (Law Enforcement, Tow Truck Operator, or First Responders with Traffic Incident Management experience.
Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
The ability to lift and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
Ability to obtain Authorized Emergency Vehicle Permit (AEVP) prior to IRT operations.

To be considered for the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) you must also have:
A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A without restrictions with endorsement N within 12 months of hiring. WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, or other truck driving, or Traffic Incident management, (Law Enforcement, Tow Truck Operator, or First Responders with Traffic Incident Management experience).
Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
The ability to lift and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
Ability to obtain Authorized Emergency Vehicle Permit (AEVP) prior to IRT operations.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
Washington Class A CDL (without restrictions) with N endorsement.
Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TIM) or any incident management, training, or experience.
Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
