Job Description:
The mechanic is responsible for performing demand repair and preventative maintenance at the direction of the head mechanic. The mechanic is responsible for work on diesel and gasoline vehicles including school buses, motor-pool vehicles, maintenance department vehicles, and maintenance department equipment. The mechanic is expected to be able to effectively diagnose problems and to perform appropriate repairs in a timely manner. The mechanic is also expected to carry out preventative maintenance activities and to perform safety inspections according to documented procedures. The mechanic is responsible for the accurate documentation of the work he or she completes. The mechanic is expected to contribute to the professionalism, order, and cleanliness of the shop. The mechanic is also expected to be able to assume the duties of the head mechanic in his or her absence, with particular attention directed to the management of vehicle defect reports, contracted repair services, parts ordering, and the preventative maintenance plan.



TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:



The position is 8.0 hours per day, 260 days per year, and PSE Union represented.



Hours will be set by the Transportation Director. The mechanic may be required to work additional hours depending on the needs of the department.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDING LICENSE, EDUCATION, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:



High school graduate, GED, or equivalent required.
AS degree, military training, or technical college Certificate of Completion in an automotive or commercial vehicle program preferred.
Minimum of 5-yrs experience as a mechanic preferred.
Hold, or obtain, and continue to hold a class B commercial driver’s license.
Hold or obtain, and continue to hold, a current commercial driver’s license physical certification.
Pass and continue to pass a WSP & FBI fingerprint background check.
Must pass and continue to pass a drug test.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND QUALITIES



Ability to accurately diagnose mechanical problems with diesel engines, gasoline engines, air brake systems, hydraulic brake systems, automatic transmissions, electrical systems, and any other systems requiring repair.
Ability to plan and carry out repairs in compliance with district, regulatory, and legal requirements.
Ability to understand written manuals with particular attention directed to the Washington State Patrol School Bus Inspection Manual.
Ability to keep accurate documentation.
Ability to keep documentation up-to-date.
Ability to use computer systems including engine and transmission interface software; Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access; and digital video system setup and diagnostic programs.
Ability to communicate effectively and positively with equipment users including school bus drivers, motor-pool vehicle drivers, and maintenance department staff.
Ability to perform duties in a disciplined, independent manner with minimal supervision.
The placement of high value on safety and high quality work.


AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Diagnose and repair mechanical problems to district, regulatory, and legal standards.
Perform preventative maintenance tasks including engine, transmission, and fuel system services; application of grease; and axle services.
Perform vehicle inspections to Washington State Patrol and Department of Transportation standards.
Document work completed according to legal, regulatory, and district requirements.
Carry out direction provided by the head mechanic.
Perform duties with minimal supervision.
Make recommendations with respect to areas of responsibility.
Assume the duties of the head mechanic in his or her absence.
Promote a positive work environment by communicating effectively and addressing driver concerns about equipment in a timely and adequate manner.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS



The position requires regular lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, crouching, fine finger manipulation, kneeling, reaching above shoulder height, reaching below the knees, and repetitive arm and hand motion. The position involves regular exposure to noise, chemicals, fumes, and dust. The position also requires sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, bending and twisting at the waist, crawling, handling items, grasping, talking, hearing, and seeing.
