Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
Washington State Ferries Information Technology Department (WSF ITD) is currently seeking an IT Systems Administrator Journey to fill a vacancy located in Seattle, WA. The Systems Administrator – Journey is responsible for IT systems planning, design, implementation, configuration, coordination of installation and repair, maintenance, day-to-day server administration, and other operational tasks at the WSF headquarters, terminals, vessels, and other supported facilities. This technician will also research and evaluate new enterprise technologies to meet the constantly changing diverse business needs of WSF and propose and lead the implementation of those technologies, supporting them throughout their lifecycle. They will provide support for a secure Payment Card Industry (PCI) enterprise data center environment for EFS Revenue Collection, including installation, operation, and compliance security audits within this environment, and support the enterprise IT needs of the largest ferry fleet in the United States. The selected candidate will ensure that WSF staff can complete their assigned work activities and keep the WSF facilities operating securely.

What to Expect
WSF ITD is a place-based organization that supports all Ferries operations plus any WSDOT groups that reside at a Ferries site. WSF ITD functions as the central support department for all technology-related equipment, software, and systems for the nearly 1,800 employees working for WSF. This includes 21 vessels and 20 terminals that span over seven counties, two countries, three major WSF facilities, and four commercial shipyards.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the WSF System Administrator will:

Independently work on all levels of assignment that involve the administration (installation, maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, and root cause failure analysis) of all regional, divisional, and departmental IT systems, server services and applications, and IT facilities throughout the Ferries Division.
Use advanced knowledge to install, configure and maintain existing and new multiple-server datacenter environments for the complex IT systems.
Manage system backup and recovery activities and participate in recovery exercises.
Use enterprise system configuration, management, and monitoring software to maintain service availability and send incident alerts for notification of potential problems.
Monitor system logs and performance metrics to analyze trends that could adversely impact cyber security, capacity and or resiliency.
Use advanced hardware and software diagnostic tools to identify the root cause of failures and to resolve complex or unusual system problems.
Research knowledge base articles and user forums or work with vendor technicians for potential error resolution.
Maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, and manage the security of all WSF IT environments (including Corporate and Payment Card Industry (PCI) environments), ensuring compliance and performing required daily, weekly, and annual related and required tasks.
Coordinate security efforts with the HQ Cybersecurity Team and is knowledgeable of OCIO, OIT, and other Cybersecurity policies.
Assist to maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, and manage the greater WSF telecommunications and network infrastructure.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology field or discipline. Additional years of experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis .
Four (4) years of experience supporting the operation of enterprise-level server infrastructure.
Competent professional working knowledge (Journey Level) gained by on-the-job experience or advanced education in the principles, concepts, and methods used to independently modify, develop, or maintain: Domain Services, virtualization, cloud-based technologies, Microsoft and Linux-based server operating systems, data center health management, backup and recovery systems, and advanced user management.
The ability to manipulate and transport up to 35 pounds of equipment.
The ability to acquire and hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert – 2012 R2 or higher.
Expert level knowledge of storage area network management.
Expert level knowledge of Backup and Recovery processes and procedures.
Senior to Expert level knowledge of Instant Messaging/Presence/Collaboration
Senior to Expert level knowledge of Video Encoding/Streaming.
Senior level Datacenter Management skills.
Senior level knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
Senior-level knowledge of Microsoft’s PowerShell scripting language.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.

This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
This position requires the ability to provide on-call support 24/7 in as part of a rotation.
