Job Description:
This position is responsible for validating and extracting CPT and ICD-10-CM codes that are supported by documentation and is responsible for following up on claims in accordance with payer rules and benefits.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Apply coding principles consistent with government regulatory standards and payer specific guidelines of health plans.
Extract CPT codes for office procedures and surgeries.
Query providers as needed for clear understanding of documentation or missing information for a service or diagnosis.
Provide fee estimates to patients when requested.
Assist clinic and billing staff with any coding related questions.
Communicate with insurance companies for denial and authorization purposes.
Review and adjust coding related denials to maximize reimbursement.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding guidelines; medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; state and federal Medicare reimbursement guidelines; English grammar and usage.
Ability to research and analyze data, draw conclusions, and resolve issues; read, interpret, and apply policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
Ability to read and interpret medical procedures and terminology.
Ability to develop training materials, make group presentations, and to train staff
Ability to exercise independent judgment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to prepare reports and related documents and to maintain working relationships with physicians and other staff.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Education and Experience:
CPC certification required
6-12 months experience in billing/coding preferred
Knowledge of medical terminology required
Excellent written and oral communication skills
EMR experience
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
