Job Description:
The Water Resource Recovery Operations and Services Program is seeking an Instrument Technician Apprentice. This position trains in and performs work in installing, modifying, repairing, calibrating, and maintaining electronic, hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic instruments and systems used to indicate, record, and provide data to Programmable Logic Controllers and SCADA systems for process control to maximize the efficiency of treatment plants and pumping stations.

Additional Information:
The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled or have graduated from a District approved Technical Program (i.e. Perry Technical Institute, Bellingham Technical College).

This position will remain open until filled. The first review of applications will begin on Monday, January 23, 2023.

Essential Functions:
(Performed under close supervision and in a developmental capacity. The essential functions listed below are not intended to reflect all duties that may be assigned to this classification. The District may augment duties and/or essential functions at its discretion. Additionally, some incumbents may not perform all Essential Functions.)

Train in installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, modifying, and repairing a variety of instrumentation and control equipment including sensors, transmitters, monitors, recorders, detectors, flowmeters, controllers, and other equipment common to large and complex wastewater treatment facilities and pumping stations. Learn to efficiently assess problems in order to recommend cost effective solutions, such as repair vs. replacement or in-house vs. out-sourced repair.

Train in the process of new construction projects, including design reviews, submittal reviews, construction inspection, commissioning, documentation, training, and warranty.

Learn to program, troubleshoot, and maintain programmable logic controllers and microprocessor-based equipment.

Learn to install instrumentation from engineering and electrical drawings; assist with the preparation of schematics and reports to reflect changes or alterations made in equipment, circuits and systems.

Assist with requisitioning the materials and equipment needed to perform work assignments; maintain operating logs; record required information.

Keeps assigned area(s) clean and hazard-free; uses safe work practices and required personal protective equipment; follows District safety policies and procedures.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the required KSAs would be:
Possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent, and have completed one year of high school algebra, integrated math 2, or equivalent post-high school algebra course(s) with a grade of C or better or submit equivalent math placement test scores.
AND
Basic understanding in installing, modifying, repairing, and servicing electronic, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic instruments.
AND
Prior acceptance into a District approved apprenticeship program (Clackamas Community College or Portland Community College); and/or training in instrument technology, electronics technology, or related fields.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess and maintain a valid state issued driver’s license at time of appointment.

Upon hire, candidates will be enrolled in an apprenticeship program and will be working towards their Limited Energy Technician Class B (LEB) Certification, normally a 2-year process. Up to one year of experience may be credited for prior work and/or education.
