Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of WSDOT, is the largest ferry system in the U.S. and safely and efficiently carries nearly 25 million people a year through some of the most majestic scenery in the world. The WSF system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands and internationally to Sidney, British Columbia. WSF has more than 1,800 employees throughout the Puget Sound region on vessels, in terminals, at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility and at the headquarters facility in Seattle.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Machinist Journeyperson to perform skilled machinist and marine diesel mechanic work in accordance with Federal, State, and US Coast Guard regulations.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Journey-Level Machinist will:

Respond to equipment failures around the clock
Work in harsh weather conditions
Overhaul, repair, marine propulsion engines, and replace all vessel machinery and engines above and below decks
Repair and overhaul pumps to include sewage, potable water, raw water, fuel, oil transfer, and saltwater.
Operation of lathes, milling machines, drill press, and other shop equipment.
Precision alignment of pumps with a dial indicator and laser alignment tooling.
Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems.
Stock and operate tool room and sign shop for Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Journey-level status as a Machinist, OR
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Machinist.
Valid Washington State Driver’s License
Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 90 days of hire.
Physical ability to perform job responsibilities under the stated working conditions and under emergency conditions/situations.
Annual respiratory questionnaire and fit test, which may include the requirement to shave if necessary to obtain a skin-to-rubber seal.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Experience in rigging heavy equipment out of and into vessel compartments

Important Notes
By issuance of proclamation, the Governor of Washington State mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than October 18, 2021. This is a condition of employment with WSDOT. Exemption may be granted for religious or medical purposes.
This position is subject to the completion of a respiratory questionnaire as required by the regulatory authority, and an annual fit test, to obtain a skin-to-rubber seal.
