The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an experienced mechanic who wants to utilize their skills to work on a variety of motor vehicles and highway maintenance equipment in our shops in Spokane. We are looking for a mechanic to perform preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, and other services on all inventoried equipment including passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy equipment, and a variety of highway maintenance equipment. This position is critical in ensuring that equipment is ready to roll to keep our highways free of hazards and open to the traveling public year-round. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on all WSDOT equipment, both in the shop and in the field.
Troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair gas, diesel, and electric engines, electrical & electronic systems, brakes, hydraulic systems, suspensions, steering and fuel systems.
Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot, all types of gear boxes such as manual, computer controlled and automated or automatic transmissions, differentials, angle boxes, reduction boxes, transfer cases, torque converters, hydrostatically driven, etc.
Preform preventive maintenance to include performing regularly scheduled maintenance on equipment as needed.
Complete seasonal mounting, repairs and metal fabrication to sanders, snowplows, self-propelled brooms, weed sprayers, tractor mounted mowers and other specialized seasonal equipment.
Prepare newly delivered equipment for service.
Road test equipment before and after repairs are made.
Repair and Maintain fuel dispensing sites.
Operate a computer to maintain shop records.
Keep shop safe, clean, and orderly.
Operate shop equipment such as welders, drill press, grinder, press, hoist, air tools, forklifts, saws, computerized diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and jacks for the purpose of repairing equipment, designing and fabricating one of a kind specialty parts, tools or accessories.

Qualifications
This is an Equipment Technician 3 (ET3) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (ET2 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

At a minimum, this opportunity requires:
At least two (2) years' experience assisting a journey-level mechanic; OR an Associate of Applied Science degree or a Trade School certificate in Automotive, Diesel Technology, Heavy-Duty Equipment, or related field.
A valid Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a Washington State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A, within 12 months of hire.
Ability to obtain First Aid Certification within 6 months.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Basic computer skills with the ability to operate Microsoft Office Suite and the maintain equipment records.
Ability to communicate verbally and in the written form with internal and external customers.
Ability to listen, follow instructions, work safely, be punctual, and dependable.
Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50lbs from one location to another in safe manner, which may include replacing plow bits, loader bucket bits, big tires, and wheels.
Experience operating computerized diagnostic testing equipment, welders, drill presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.

To be considered for the highest level (ET3), you must also have:
At least three (3) years of experience preforming preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey-level mechanic; OR journey-level standing as a heavy equipment mechanic, demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship, OR one year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment, OR by journey-level standing as a heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship or recognized labor union.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment or automotive.
ASE certifications in Automotive or Heavy Truck or equipment.

Important Notes
This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Equipment Technician 3 level, however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as an Equipment Technician 2, if not qualified at the highest level.
This recruitment may be used to fill additional positions per business need.
This position is not eligible for remote work.
