The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 In-Training position for our Pasco area. These journey-level positions are members of the regional maintenance organization. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, these positions will be responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position will perform a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

Perform snow and ice removal, which includes operating dump trucks and sanders, as well has hauling sand and gravel.
Design and set-up of traffic control, which includes establishing temporary work zones, mobile work operations and using traffic control devices.
Perform general roadway maintenance activities such as:
Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
Sign maintenance and repair.
Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
Litter removal and rest area work.
Lead and train others in the absence of the Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
Effectively use radio, phone, computers, and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
Negotiate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
Respond to call out emergency’s day, night, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Qualifications
This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at the lower level (HMW1 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

At a minimum, this opportunity requires:
Class A CDL and current medical card.
Two (2) years of experience performing highway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operations.
Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels and flagging, or the ability to obtain within 6 months.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate, or equivalent.
Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License (required within 12 months of hire).
Important Notes
In additional to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). For more information, please go to DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing.
Typical schedule is Monday-Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10 hour days.
