POSITION PURPOSE

The Plumber / Boiler Technician / General Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing skilled plumbing, pipefitting, and preventative maintenance repairs in facilities at Whitman College.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
1) Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, maintains and tests plumbing, heating, cooling, and other piping systems. Cameras, water jets, augers, unplugs and maintains sewer waste lines and storm drains.
2) Removes and replaces or installs all types of plumbing fixtures such as water closets, sinks, drinking fountains with bottle fillers, showers, kitchen, laboratory, domestic water heaters and boilers, and other equipment.
3) Maintains and repairs piping, constructing various types of pipe joints for high and low pressure systems, including threading, brazing, soldering, crimping and welding.
4) Installs fittings, hangers, anchors, guides, drains, clean outs and piping of all kinds.
5) Orders supplies and materials as required. Maintain tools and work van in a professional manner.
8) Must work within the safety rules of the State and Whitman College. Actively participates in the college accident prevention program and attend all safety meetings.
9) Must be able to respond to campus emergencies throughout the year.
10) Assist with all other maintenance trades as needed, including moving furniture and other supplies.
11) Help Maintain rain gutter, downspout systems, roof drains and cleaning roofs.
12) Perform backup Boiler Technician and all other General Maintenance duties as requested by supervisor.
13) Consult daily with Maintenance Supervisor

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Must be able to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
2. Must be able to twist, squat, kneel, bend, crawl and work above your head for periods of extended time.
3. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, work on roofs and at heights above 20 feet.
4. Must be able to work in confined and close quarters.
5. Must be able to operate all maintenance vehicles and equipment.
6. Must be able to communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing.
7. Must be able to be on call (minimum of 4 weekends per year) and work after hours when necessary.
8. Ability to use a computerized work order system
9. Ability to work closely and congenially with faculty, staff and students.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High School graduation, two years' experience as a journey level plumber. Knowledge of tools and related equipment is necessary. Plumbing Skills, knowledge, common sense and the ability to use each in making decisions. Must possess valid driver’s license, pass background check and employment physical.
