The Medical Assistant extern/intern will be matched with an experienced Medical Assistant to perform clinical and administrative functions. The extern/intern will also assist with patient care, including tracking for intake, refill, dispensation, discharge through the patient cycle in our facilities, and coordination with medical facilities, under manager supervision.
Assist with and/or shadows a certified medical assistant while performing the following patient care duties:
Clean med room and keep organization of medication.
Observe patient self-medication and assist with patient-self administration, in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
Pick up medications from pharmacy, complete medication sheets.
Observe/document collection of sample for urinalysis drug testing.
Contact physicians to verify medication orders.
May assist in scheduling appointments for patients with medical service providers or the court.
Obtain specified information from patients on assigned forms as part of intake.
Monitor and record blood glucose levels for diabetic patients. Check and record blood pressure and other vitals of patients.
Transport patients using the agency vehicle to their appointments or meetings.
Keep track of patients' medications that will need to be re-filled by coordinating with Recovery Support Specialist staff in advance.
Ensure health care history form is complete highlighting any significant conditions or changes.
Interface with the pharmacy as needed.
Manage and assign scheduling for correct coverage of all patient needs.
Assist, as needed, in performing specific daily activities, i.e., providing tours to visitors; answer the phones; and take messages.
Understand and support all program rules; policies and procedures.
Assist in daily inspections of the client's rooms and building, depending upon the shift and if the same sex as patient.
Make bedroom and grounds checks.
Attend staff "pass down meeting" at shift change as required, and participate appropriately.
Review operating supplies inventory and note shortages for action by program manager. Fill out supply requests as needed.
Document written observations to the counselors and Program Manager in a timely manner.
Sign in/out patients who leave the facility for appointments etc.
Become proficient in the Electronic Health Record.
Operate photocopier as needed. Answer the phone, document and file messages.
Clean intake and program office areas, disinfect counter tops and sinks, do laundry for the facility, remove garbage, and perform simple maintenance tasks, i.e. use plunger in toilets.
Store supplies that are delivered to facility.
Ensure that chores are assigned to clients are completed. Teach skills required to complete the task if needed. Observe and document patient struggles and both negative and well as positive behaviors with the goal of support for recovery.
Assist in admission of patients coming into treatment during the shift.
Introduce patients to other staff members and to other patients in treatment.
Dispense toiletries and other personal items to patients, in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
Provide general information to patients about the program.
Support mothers in their parenting.
Perform errands as assigned by Program Manager.
Review all auditing of the program.
High School Diploma or GED is required.
Graduation or graduating from a nationally accredited Medical Assistant program.
