The job of Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of ensuring the availability of district buses and vehicles in
safe operating condition including inspecting, maintaining, and determining needed repairs and/or
replacements; performing required repairs and preventive maintenance and providing written
documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements.
Adjusts parts and/or components for the purpose of ensuring the fitness and proper operation of all
Diagnoses potential equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or
Directs bus drivers on mechanical operations of bus for the purpose of safely transporting students and
Inspects transportation and maintenance vehicles for the purpose of adhering to Washington State
Patrol guidelines and manufacturers recommendations.
Maintains tools, equipment and shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of
required tools and support equipment within a safe and efficient work area.
Performs road tests for the purpose of ensuring the safe operation of district vehicles.
Prepares documentation (e.g. records of mileage, records of repairs, maintenance logs, parts used, etc.)
for the purpose of conveying required information and meeting federal and state requirements.
Procures replacement parts and supplies for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and
completing jobs efficiently and within budgetary limits.
Repairs systems/components for the purpose of ensuring the availability of district vehicles and
equipment to meet the transportation and district needs of students, teachers, administrative staff, and
Replaces all defective parts for the purpose of ensuring the availability of district vehicles and equipment.
Communicates with bus drivers, district staff and general public for the purpose of providing information
regarding route times, lost children, discipline actions, etc.
Performs other related duties for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the
supervises students and other passengers during transit for the purpose of maintaining safety and
following district policy.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet
changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job
include: adhering to safety practices; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles; and preparing and
maintaining accurate records, computer skills.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; read
technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to
define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the
functions of the job include: ignition, basic electricity, vehicle air systems, fuel delivery systems, hydraulic braking
systems, electronic systems, and computer troubleshooting systems; read and understand wiring diagrams;
manufacturers maintenance manuals.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment.
Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different
processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work
with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.
Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires
analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based
competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities;
communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; and setting priorities; working as a part of a
team; resolving mechanical problems; communicating with bus drivers.
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or
coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. utilization of some resources from other work units is often
required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:
significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling,
crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 20% walking,
and 70% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to
risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
