SDOT’s Paving and Equipment Pool Team has a wonderful opportunity for a Heavy Truck Driver. The Heavy Truck Driver, under general supervision, hauls all equipment and rubble from active worksites to different vendors and transports heavy equipment such as asphalt grinders, asphalt pavers, and large-size rollers to the many worksites SDOT has around the City. This driver will support SDOT’s paving team by transporting asphalt from production plants to job sites. Additionally, drivers maintain the cleanliness of the vehicles they drive.

Job Responsibilities
Drives a truck/trailer combination hauling solid waste from transfer stations to assigned destinations.
Drives heavy dump trucks (in excess of 10,000 lbs. GVW) with pup, tilt, or low boy trailers hauling equipment or material to construction sites.
Operates mechanical and hydraulic equipment attached to trucks such as trailers, winches, hoists, pumps, and compressors.
Ensures safety regulations are observed during the loading, rigging transporting, and unloading of materials.
Performs thorough inspection of combination truck or tractor/trailers prior to operation to ensure its safe condition; cleans equipment and performs minor repair.
Maintains records of mileage, servicing, and minor maintenance of equipment.
Leads and works with a crew as assigned.
Drives a variety of trucks requiring a Class "A" CDL.
Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
One year of experience in the operation of heavy trucks, including multi-axle trucks and truck/trailer or tractor/trailer combinations.
Knowledge of City, State, and Federal rules and regulations governing the safe operation of truck/trailer and tractor/trailer combinations.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:
A valid Washington State Commercial's Driver's License - Class "A", with the airbrake restriction removed, and a valid Medical Certificate.
A "Full Employment" Abstract of Driving Record from the State of Washington Department of Licensing. (obtained at applicant's expense at the time of moving forward to the driving testing).
Pre-employment tests in compliance with the Federal Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing Program Requirements.
A valid Washington State Flagging Card, First Aid/CPR card, and/or a defensive driving course certificate may be required within six months of employment.
Desired Qualifications:
Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
Understanding of SDOT Safety Policy.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
May be required to be on call 24 hours/day to respond to emergencies.
Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time; lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds; handle or work near toxic/hazardous substances, and work outdoors in all types of weather.
Required to spend long periods of time driving trucks, often in heavy traffic and under adverse weather conditions.
Drive in both urban street and rural environments, including unimproved roads. May be required to operate trucks on mountainous logging roads.
