The Fleet Management Division is recruiting for a journey-level heavy equipment or automotive mechanic (AM). This role works on a wide variety of equipment, from hybrid and EV police cars to fire trucks to construction equipment, all of which support essential City of Seattle operations.
As a Heavy Equipment/Auto Mechanic, you are part of a team that performs preventative maintenance, ensures repairs are completed, and performs emergency repairs for the people who count on us to keep their equipment safe and reliable. You will be supported by a Crew Chief and a Senior Tech and a team shop supervisor.
The successful candidate has a strong background in mechanical systems and diagnostics and is eager to gain knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic principals, diesel and gas engine technology, and EV/alternative fuels. Perform diagnostic, repair, and preventative maintenance work on equipment as assigned
Perform mobile repairs if dispatched for equipment breakdown support
Perform road tests on light and heavy-duty vehicles
Participate in daily crew meetings to share information and assignments
Document work clearly and completely in fleet management system
Accurately record time by punching on/off tasks in fleet management system
Complete assigned safety, city-wide, and technical training
Participate in collaborative tasks and projects
Example of types of vehicles worked on: cars, pickups, work trucks from F-150 to F-750, Peterbilt trucks, ambulances, dump trucks, trailers, excavators, specialty mowers
As part of FAS, the Fleet Management (FM) division purchases, maintains, customizes, diagnoses, and repairs over 4,000 vehicles and equipment for all City departments. This includes cars, heavy trucks, firefighting apparatus, police vehicles, electric/hybrid vehicles, and specialized equipment. FM has been named the “#1 Best Fleet” and “Best Green Fleet” in America. Our shop operations have earned an EnviroStar rating for environmental stewardship. We provide critical services that keep the City of Seattle moving all year around.
Our shop hours are 6:00am – 12:30am. We also provide on-call services nights and weekends, and 24-hour service during city emergencies such as extreme weather events.
Four years of experience working under a journey-level Automotive or Heavy-Duty Mechanic
OR completion of an accredited apprenticeship program
OR a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background of journey-level mechanic
Must possess a valid State of Washington driver's license.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no restrictions (i.e., Class A or Class B CDL, depending on job duties) within six (6) months of hire.
Experience using electronic work order management software, such as CDK or Fleet Anywhere
Advanced knowledge of vehicle mechanics and fleet equipment maintenance
Advanced knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic principals
Training or experience with Electric or Hybrid vehicles
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in Automotive and/or Truck disciplines
Organizational and problem-solving skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
