Job Description:
WSDOT Commercial Vehicle Services (CVS) is currently seeking a Transportation Planning Technician 2 to serve as the Vehicle Size and Weight Specialist on a non-permanent basis. Within CVS, this position has approval authority for "super load" permits which includes coordinating with state patrol, local law enforcement agencies, pavement and bridge engineers, regional maintenance offices and customers to ensure that the infrastructure will support the routing of the super loads. This position also collects, validates, summarizes, and analyzes road usage data necessary for the design, construction and maintenance of the state transportation system. This position is the subject matter expert for commercial vehicle size and weight rules and regulations in Washington State.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Vehicle Size and Weight Specialist will:
- Collect, summarize, and analyze motor carrier size and weights for both legal and over dimensional operations.
- Perform mathematical calculations to determine the amount of gross weight a vehicle can carry legally and or under special motor vehicle permit for overweight, based on tire sizes, number of axles and spacing between axles.
- Analyzes the weight and route data before submitting to bridge preservation, affected by the move and pavement, as appropriate, for final analysis and final approval.
- Compile the restrictions from bridge preservation and from the affected regions to organize them into a plan of movement.
- Generate a permit for the customer’s specific movement.
- Provide analytical, technical, and legal compliance support to trucking industry representatives, owners/operators, permitting offices and agents, and to the Washington State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau, relative to size and weight compliance issues.
- Verify compliance of permits issued by industry by reviewing samples of self issued permits.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
High School education or equivalent
One (1) year as a Transportation Planning Technician 1 or equivalent of collecting, summarizing, and analyzing road usage data
Working knowledge of RCW, WAC, and CFR regulations as they pertain to commercial vehicle size and weight.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations to determine legal and permitted weights for commercial vehicles.
Ability to communicate effectively and speak before groups.
Ability to effectively multi?task in a fast?paced work environment.
Experience processing, reviewing or analyzing superload permits.
