Overview

Under the supervision of the Maintenance Shop Manager, qualified mechanics and/or instructors, the apprentice will learn and demonstrate knowledge of performing mechanical tasks in the diagnosis of malfunctions, preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various types of transit equipment in the field and in the maintenance shop. The Apprentice Mechanic program is governed by the Standards of Apprenticeship adopted by the Community Transit/IAM Apprenticeship Committee.
Essential Duties

Perform mechanical tasks in the diagnosis of malfunctions, preventative maintenance, repair and overhaul of various types of transit equipment in the field and in the maintenace shop, under the supervision of the Maintenance Shop Manager and qualified Mechanics and/or Instructors.
Requirements

High school graduate or GED and either an Associate's Degree in Diesel Technology or Certificate of Competency/Proficiency in Diesel Technology encompassing at least 76 credits from an accredited technical college or trade school within the last 5 years. A copy of your transcript is required with the application.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license by time of hire and have a good driving record.
Possession of equipment tools required of a Apprentice Mechanic at the time of hire.
Must possess or be able to obtain a Class B Washington State Commercial Driver's license with passenger endorsement and airbrake restrictions lifted within 90 days of hire.
Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.
Ability to work any shift assigned to meet the needs of the agency, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Qualification to enter this position requires knowledge of the following:

Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions followed in heavy equipment repair shops.
Knowledge of English, verbal and written, sufficient to read, speak, comprehend and retain information.

Qualification to enter this position requires skill in the following:

Skill in the use of jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic hoists, cleaning materials, precision tools, and equipment used in the service or repair of heavy equipment.

Qualification to enter this position requires the following abilities:

Ability to drive a variety of vehicles from large buses to vans and cars.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing and be able to follow written and verbal instructions and understand equipment repair documentation and diagrams.
Ability to work while exposed to grease, dirt, carbon monoxide and diesel fumes from vehicles.
Ability to demonstrate knowledge obtained through both written and practical application evaluations.
Ability to locate and correct defects in automotive and diesel equipment.
Ability to appropriately handle stress and interactions with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

One year experience in mechanical or diesel equipment preferred.
Skilled at computer and computer software preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions, carrying and driving.
