The Opportunity

WSDOT has many vacancies and is eager to hire and assemble multiple journey level highway maintenance professionals to be a valuable team member of our Regionwide Traffic Control Crew, working out of our Everett Maintenance Facility. This is an in-training opportunity that offers a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship and allows you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. This position will operate Class A, B, and/or C level heavy equipment to perform highway maintenance and traffic control operations to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. As a member of the Regionwide Traffic Control Crew, this position will perform a variety of skilled highway maintenance tasks, focusing on the design and execution of safely setting up traffic control for all operations including full road and/or bridge closures according to department standards.

Working in the maintenance area will require responsible, safety-minded individuals to accomplish skilled tasks that require operating trucks and various other highway and heavy equipment. These positions require a quick response time to job sites. Highway maintenance crews are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Regionwide Traffic Control Worker will:

Perform traffic control such as manual flag traffic or signing for lane closures, road closures, and detours.
Conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.
Respond to and act as a first responder in emergency situations, providing traffic control as needed and coordinating with external agencies.
Provide periodic updates to supervisor and internal customers and make recommendations for additional resources as needed.
Operate Class A, B, and/or C equipment to provide traffic control and/or maintain state roadways and highways.
Assists in the safe cleanup and removal of roadway debris, including the safe handling, containment, transportation, and disposal of hazardous substances and objects.
Track, document, and report daily work activities and will monitor the inventory of equipment using MAP system.


To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following are required:

One (1) year of experience performing highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, heavy equipment, or equivalent.

To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following are required:

Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction and no transmission restrictions, and valid medical card.
Two (2) years of experience performing highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, heavy equipment, or equivalent.

In addition, candidates at either level will have:

High School Diploma or GED
Ability to respond to emergency call outs, work nights, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights, and weekends), and perform standby duty.
Ability to lift and transport up to 50lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to work in all weather conditions including confined spaces, uneven terrain, and next to fast high volume highway traffic.
Ability to operate heavy equipment, and hand and power tools.
Basic computer skills to communicate and retrieve information.
Ability to work at heights above 25 feet over land or water while performing maintenance tasks.
Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card
Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License
Backflow Prevention Tester Certification

These are in-training positions that offer a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship. These positions allow you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. Candidates will be considered for a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or Highway Maintenance Worker 2, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:
Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $43,480 - $52,628
Highway Maintenance Worker 2: $52,628 - $64,086
