Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Medical Records Clerk ensures compliance with all medical record information while maintaining quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic filing systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following functions have been determined by Ideal Option to be essential to the successful performance of this position which includes but is not limited to:
• Reviews all incoming Release of Information and verifies all elements are completed.
• Responds to requests for medical records; processes letters of compliance and reports; answers and directs telephone calls for the Medical Records Department.
• Answers calls from clinic staff pertaining to medical records.
• Keeps direct supervisor informed of problems or issues, monitors supplies needed; performs other duties as assigned.
• Complies with Federal HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 regulations and practice policies for the privacy and security of patient information.
• Explains the law and our privacy policy to patients as needed.
• Maintains appropriate documentation of access to all medical records.
• Other projects and duties as assigned.
Competencies:
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and Internet.
• Ability to learn quickly.
• Ability to work independently and able to problem solve.
• A knowledge of chemical dependency and its effects on individuals, families, and communities is required.
Minimum Requirements:
• High School Diploma or GED.
• A minimum of one-year experience in a medical office setting.
Working Environment:
• General office environment: Works generally at a desk in a well-lighted, air-conditioned cubicle/office, with moderate noise levels.
• Periods of stress may occur.
Physical Demands:
• Activities require a significant amount of sitting at office and work desks and in front of a computer monitor.
• Some walking and standing relative to interaction with other personnel.
