The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced mechanic who wants to utilize their skills to work on a variety of motor vehicles and highway maintenance equipment for the Union Gap Equipment Shop. The Equipment Technician 3 will perform journey level preventative maintenance, inspection, repairs, and other services on all inventoried equipment including passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy equipment, and other various highway maintenance equipment. This position will perform the following work:
- Safely move in, on, and around heavy equipment for the purposes of inspections, diagnoses, journey level repairs, and road tests used in highway maintenance, construction, and repair.
- Operate shop equipment such as welders, torches, grinders, vacuum tooling, digital Volt/Ohm meter, electronic diagnostic tools, drill press, hydraulic press, wheel pullers, hoists, vehicle lifts, cranes, lathes, jacks, air tools, hand tools, various power tools, and other various diagnostic and repair tools and equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to a wide variety of highway maintenance equipment in the Union Gap Equipment Shop; as well as, in the field.
- Inspect, diagnose, overhaul, and repair gas and diesel engines and transmissions; as well as, all vehicle systems; including, but not limited to: fuel and engine systems; operating controls; electrical systems; brake systems; drive train, steering and suspension systems; hydraulic systems, and cooling systems, etc.
- Complete seasonal mounting, repairs and metal fabrication to sanders, snowplows, self-propelled sweepers, weed sprayers, tractor mounted mowers, trailers, and other specialized equipment; such as, boom lifts, bucket lifts, and equipment attachments.
- Design, weld, and fabricate one of a kind specialty parts, tools, or accessories as requested by supervision.
- Safely operate and transport equipment as needed for repair or testing purposes on site and to/from region shops and repair facilities.
- Repair and maintain fuel sites by repairing leaks, conducting site cleanup, and other various functions related to the fuel sites; and ensure shop areas are clean.
Operate a PC or laptop computer for diagnostic processes, communications, and to maintain shop records and parts inventory levels.
- Order necessary repair and preventative maintenance parts needed to complete assigned tasks.
- Utilize personal protective equipment to ensure a safe working environment.
- Read, interpret, and comprehend vehicle repair manuals, online technical information; and mentor/train and assist other employees on new systems and repair processes.
- Support and work effectively, safely, productively, and efficiently with co-workers of various experience levels and personalities; and be willing to assist as needed when completing various maintenance and repair duties.
- Attend and participate in trainings and safety meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications for this position are:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a journey-level repair technician repairing light, medium, and heavy duty equipment and vehicles in an established vehicle repair facility; OR Journey level standing or certification as a journey level heavy equipment mechanic through completion of a recognized labor union apprenticeship program.
- Class A CDL with N (cargo/tanker) endorsement without airbrakes restrictions and the ability to operate all motor vehicles designated under Class A CDL specifications (or the ability to obtain one within twelve (12) months of appointment through the WSDOT internal process).
- Ownership of a basic set of hand tools to accomplish all repairs, diagnosis, and maintenance.
- The ability to work effectively, safely, productively and efficiently with co-workers of varying levels of experience and ability.
- The ability to learn new systems; and mentor/train and assist other employees on new systems and repair processes.
- The ability to stand for 30 minute periods of time during a 10 hour work shift (Day or Night) in all weather conditions.
- Ability and willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
- The ability to lift and manipulate up to 50 pounds of various materials without assistance, and loads over 50 pounds with assistance (i.e. Raise engine cowls on dump trucks without assistance).
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and traverse steep and uneven terrain.
- The ability to move and maneuver around in, on and under various pieces of equipment.
- The ability to use both hands for grasping, griping, twisting, and fine finger manipulation; bend and twist torso to access tight locations on vehicles and equipment; accessing from above, in front of, and below.

Preferred qualifications for this position are:
- Associate of Applied Science degree or a Trade School certificate in Automotive, Diesel Technology, Heavy-Duty Equipment, or related field.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Certifications.
- Extensive working knowledge of vehicle systems, including power plants, electrical/electronics, drive trains, and other equipment utilized by WSDOT.
- The ability to read and comprehend vehicle repair manuals and printed materials.
