The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking to fill a Traffic Safety Systems Operator 3 position in the Traffic Management Center (TMC) located in Union Gap, WA. This Traffic Safety Systems Operator will dispatch service calls to field crews, monitor and operate the region's intelligent transportation systems; such as, roadside cameras, variable message signs (VMS), traffic signals and detectors, and highway advisory radios (HAR). The traffic and incident information collected is then passed on to motorists, response agencies, and the media. By keeping travelers informed, the South Central Region TMC increases the efficiency and safety of the traveling public within the region. The Traffic Safety Systems Operator is expected to consider personal, co-worker, and public safety as the first and foremost objective during the planning and performance of all activities in connection with work assignments.

Please Note: This position is assigned to a permanent night shift (7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.); which includes every other weekend and holidays.

This position will perform the following work:
- Act as the principle contact for the public and receive initial impact for complaints via phone, email, or in person.
- Assume responsibility of Supervisor in their absence for the operation of radio and electronic communications systems in the Central Washington TMC; which also includes acting as a back-up for the Hyak Traffic Operations Center on - Snoqualmie Pass, and the North Central Traffic Management Center in Wenatchee.
- As a shift operator of the electronic communications systems, receive, transmit, and coordinate roadway conditions, snow and pass reports, road restrictions, avalanche control, and service requirements via multi-frequency base stations; and fixed and mobile units.
- Maintain current status of all mobile units and responsible for accurate records pertaining to road, traffic, weather, and incident information received via phone, radio and email.
- Monitor and operate variable speed limit system, highway advisory radios, variable message signs, Gov. Delivery announcements, and highway camera systems.
- Operate multi-frequency radio console, multi-line phone system, computer terminal, and other data recording equipment.
- Transmit work orders to maintenance crews for emergency or regular maintenance repairs relating to roads, signs, bridges, lights, signals, radios, cameras, or other mechanical equipment.
- Record, evaluate, and disseminate reports of collisions, traffic hazards, signal malfunctions, disabled vehicles, and property damage; initiating appropriate action.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with WSDOT staff, other agencies, and the public, in emergency situations, and under stress and pressure.
- Independently observe and monitor camera images, computer images, and other electronic control systems.
- Alert maintenance personnel and other agencies to receive and disseminate emergency information and potential hazards.
- Keep supervisor apprised of emergency or unusual incidents in progress and provide assistance to Operations Specialists.
- Provide excellent customer service to employees and the traveling public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications for this position:
- A High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience as a radio operator or dispatcher operating multi-channel, and two-way radio equipment.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment and under stressful situations.
- The ability to take independent action in analyzing and determining priorities, recognize patterns, and anticipate needs.
- Demonstrated experience with computer usage and data entry, with the ability to troubleshoot problems arising with a variety of electronic systems.
- The ability to use a phone and an 800 MHz radio system.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods with internal and external customers.
- The ability to sit for long periods of time during emergency situations.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and demonstrate ability to stay alert concerning personal, co-worker, and public safety.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License.
