The Opportunity

WSDOT has an excellent entry-level career building opportunity for someone who wants to make a difference and join our diverse team as a Bridge Tender to safely maintain daily drawbridge operations of the 1st Avenue or Montlake Bridge. This position requires responsible, safety-minded individuals to accomplish tasks independently. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function t the State of Washington by supporting WSDOT’s mission to keep people and goods moving.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Tender will:

Responsible for the safe operation of either the 1st Avenue or Montlake Bridge, ensuring the safety of both highway and marine traffic.
Keep complete and accurate records of all bridge openings including log date, type of tow, direction of travel, time of opening, weather conditions, name of watercraft, and other pertinent information.
Monitor phone line, V.H.F. marine radio, and WSDOT radio dispatch for requests for openings or related traffic updates.
In the event of an accident or emergency contact highway radio, WSP, or local police department. Log all necessary information such as damage to state property, names of persons involved, make, year, and license of vehicle.
Maintain cleanliness of operator house, cleaning windows, restrooms, and floors.
Perform routine graffiti patrol, cleaning and painting bridge areas and/or state structures near homeless encampments to remove graffiti.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, painting, etc.
Other duties as assigned.


To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Possess a current and valid driver’s license.
High School Diploma or GED

Ability to work from elevated catwalks.
Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work at heights above 100 feet above or around a marine environment and walk on uneven ground and under bridges.
Ability to lift and transport equipment and tools up to 50lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year of experience in landscaping, painting, or general labor experience.

The listed salary includes the Legislative approved Assignment Pay.
This position requires the ability to lift and move up to 50lbs, and in all weather conditions including confined spaces, uneven terrain and next to highway traffic.
Must be able and willing to work in areas of high traffic volumes while performing their normal job functions and as required to set up signs and traffic control devices per MUTCD for tapers and tangents.
Must be able to work alternate shift schedules (including nights, weekends, and holidays).
