Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. WSDOT has an incredible opportunity for an apprentice or journey level ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) electronics technician/and or electrician, who has the ambition and skills to support the vast electrical infrastructure of Washington State's Northwest Region. The technician will perform work installing, maintaining, and repairing the electronic/electrical traffic equipment with a duty station in Kent. There must be assurances that the work is performed efficiently, with safety first as the focus. Critical decisions need to be made in the field as to the degree of hazard to the site users and the motoring public, so strong initiative and responsibility is necessary.
The work will be on various Electrical and ITS equipment, but not limited to, Traffic systems and cabinets, Variable Message Signs, CCTV, Data Stations, Lighting, electrical services, Communications including wireless, networking systems, tolling signs and various other traffic/ITS systems. The majority of the work will be in the field alongside state roadways
Our ideal candidate will have at least 4 years (C level, journey level) or 2 years (B level, apprentice level) of current experience working on and maintaining Traffic Signal and ITS equipment that is equal to what WSDOT maintains. Candidates will have to successfully pass a practical assessment demonstrating troubleshooting skills.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical Specialist will:
Partner (B level, C level work independently) with a crew to troubleshoot and repair ITS equipment, illumination systems, cameras, signal systems on the ground and out of a bucket truck.
Repair third party motor vehicle damaged equipment and complete bench repairs in shop.
Identify circuit wiring with megger, power tracer, induction field tracer, and metal detector.
Diagnose electrical problems in ITS control systems including various cabinets, ramp metering, traffic signals, cameras-detection and CCTV, fiber optics, data stations, changeable message signs and tolling systems.
Perform repairs within guidelines of NEC and WSDOT codes and regulations.
Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on ITS equipment that includes, cabinets, controllers and aerial equipment.
Work hands-on performing maintenance and repair of existing inventory.
Review drawings, prints, schematics and as-built prints as needed.
Possess trouble-shooting skills to work on control system malfunctions and be able determine the best choice of repair or replacement.
Trouble-shoot analog and digital I/O components while in the field
Work on ladders and work out of the bucket of manlifts 60' or higher.
Set and retrieve traffic control devices on high speed, high volume traffic roadways.
Install, remove, and maintain both electrical and electronic roadway equipment, both pad mounted and aerial.
Perform locates on WSDOT signals, ITS and lighting infrastructure per the 811 requirements
Operate Class B Heavy Equipment
To be considered for this opportunity at the TST B level is ($65,885 – $80,236)) level, the following are required:
2 years of technician experience installing and maintaining Traffic ITS equipment or equivalent experience in a related field.
2 years of experience working out of a bucket truck around traffic and setting up traffic control preferably to the M54-44.
2 years of experience using test equipment for power and communication.
Possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (minimum) without air brake restriction (prefer class A) or able to obtain within 6 months of employment.
To be considered for this opportunity at the TST C level is ($69,224 -$84,306)), the following are required:
At least 4 years of Journey level technician experience installing and maintaining Traffic Signal and ITS equipment independently.
4 or more years of experience working out of a bucket truck around traffic and setting up traffic control to the M54-44.
4 or more years of experience using test equipment for power and communication.
4 or more years of experience conforming work to the NEC and WSDOT standard specifications and standard plans
Possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (minimum) without air brake restriction (prefer class A)
Candidates at either level are also required to:
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a wide variety of people, including, staff, peers, vendors, contractors, engineers, etc.
Ability to work well with a wide variety of people of all ages from academically, culturally and socio-economically diverse backgrounds.
Experience using electrical and electronics metering and testing equipment.
Ability to see and differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work.
Ability to work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.
Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and move about unrestricted while climbing stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven surfaces.
Knowledge of power distribution, branch circuits, and high voltage (up to 480 VAC) distribution systems.
Able to communicate using a 700 MHZ radio network.
Ability to learn from verbal, written and electronic formats
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
4 + years of experience with an Electrical or Electronic/Control background, knowledge and skills with networking,
Certification Electronics certifications/degree.
The listed salary includes the legislative approved King County Premium of 5%.
This position can be filled at either the Transportation Systems Technician B or Transportation Systems Technician C level, depending upon qualifications.
The incumbent must be available to travel throughout the Northwest Region that extends up to the Canadian border.
This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on short notice, perform standby and participate on the call outs on a rotational basis and during inclement weather.
This position requires the ability to move up to 50 lbs., work at heights exceeding 100 feet in/around/over live traffic, work at heights up to 600 feet over water on Northwest Region bridges, and work in confined spaces.
