The Opportunity:
WSDOT is currently seeking two motivated and hard-working individuals to join the Maintenance Crews in White Pass and East Selah. The Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will need to be able to hit the ground running and lead an experienced team of Maintenance professionals responsible for performing a variety of highway, roadside, infrastructure, and right-of-way maintenance. These experienced technicians will lead by example and display a strong ability to work under pressure in demanding conditions and maintain a safe and clean work environment. In this role, you must be dedicated to safety while coordinating and preforming daily work activities which include heavy equipment operations, providing roadway maintenance for sub-sections of highways, and performing snow and ice removal functions.

What to Expect:
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
Plan, schedule, organize, and direct the performance of budget and maintenance activities.
Serve as the crew lead of a maintenance team performing such work as inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining culverts, catch basins, and ditches; asphalt and concrete repairs of roadways; repairing guardrail and roadway surfaces; blading shoulders and removing debris; plowing snow and sanding/de-icing roads; and cutting brush.
Patrol and inspect assigned highway and right of ways, documenting and reporting deficiencies of the roadway.
Coordinate equipment and personnel with other area sections.
Document daily work and complete status reports.
Assist supervisors with inventory of maintenance items, including ordering and tracking materials.
Arrange for the purchase of repair or replacement parts, arranges rental or lease of privately owned equipment.
Operate CDL and heavy equipment such as dump truck with plow and sander units, front end loaders, truck/trailer combos, sweepers, mowers, vactors, excavators, and pickups.
Train others in equipment usage, safety, highway maintenance, and public relations.
Lead crew during winter snow and ice operations.
Act as traffic control lead on emergency operations and assists crews in setting up and performing traffic control during emergency operations; act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
Utilize personal computer and tablet to maintain accurate records and reports for personnel, equipment, inventory, and materials.
Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings.
Steward safety programs by knowing and enforcing the established WSDOT/WAC safety policies and procedures; conduct safety meetings.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
At least one (1) year experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2, or Maintenance Specialist; OR two (2) years' experience as a Bridge Maintenance Technician 2, or Maintenance Specialist 2, or equivalent combination of experience.
Two (2) years' experience proficiently operating 26,000 to 54,000 GVW dump trucks in the performance of routine highway maintenance and adverse weather conditions.
Two (2) years' experience operating a dump truck with plow, sander, and deicer/anti-icing system, & a front-end loader.
Commercial Driver License Class A (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction.
A valid medical certificate.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
A valid Traffic Control Flagger Card with experience performing traffic control including planning, setting signs and barrels, and flagging, or the ability to obtain the flagging card within 6 months.
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
Ability to report in service to assigned duty station with 60 minutes of an after-hours call out.
The ability to move and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
The ability to traverse uneven and steep winter terrain adjacent to traffic.
The ability to climb ladders and work at varying height levels.
Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions under stressful conditions.
First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months.

Preferred qualifications include:
Knowledge of state highways, roadsides, and right of ways of the surrounding area.
Experience hauling/transporting heavy equipment.
Understanding and Experience dealing with Public/Private Owned Fleet & Rental Equipment.

This recruitment will be used to fill two Highway Maintenance Worker 3 positions – one position in East Selah and one position on White Pass.
