Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of WSDOT, is the largest ferry system in the U.S. and safely and efficiently carries nearly 25 million people a year through some of the most majestic scenery in the world. The WSF system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands and internationally to Sidney, British Columbia. WSF has more than 1,800 employees throughout the Puget Sound region on vessels, in terminals, at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility and at the headquarters facility in Seattle.

The Opportunity:
WSF is currently seeking a Marine Electrician Journeyperson to perform skilled/journey-level marine electrical work in accordance with Federal, State, and US Coast Guard (USCG) regulations. Supports Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility in its mission to provide preventive maintenance and emergency repair for ferry vessels and terminals. Duties include new installations of equipment, cabling and electronics, diagnostics of PLC’s, PLC controlled systems, motors, motor controllers, advanced electronic equipment, and complex control systems.

What to Expect:
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, as the Marine Electrician Journeyperson will:

Troubleshoot and repair electrical issues on vessels and at terminals
Must have the ability to respond to equipment failures and vessel breakdowns 24/7, to sustain service reliability within the fleet of vessels and terminals
Electrical systems may include, vessel propulsion, steering, lighting, power distribution, alarm and monitoring systems, communications, surveillance, cathodic protection, fiber optics and integrated battery systems
Perform preventive maintenance for vessels and terminals.
Inspection and maintenance of electrical motors.
Construction of new electrical systems.
Perform safety tasks/ establish work safety zones.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Must demonstrate ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair AC and DC electrical systems up to 4160VAC and 900VDC. Systems include vessel propulsion, steering, lighting, power distribution, alarming and monitoring, communications, surveillance, cathodic protection, and integrated battery systems
Possess specialized skills, including installing and maintaining fiber optic system, PLC’s, software controlled electronics, HMI’s, AC motors and controls, AC generators, large DC motors, motor rebrushing, commutator repair, testing DC motors and generators, use of electronic diagnostic tools, ability to read drawings, blueprints, technical documents, and an advanced knowledge in AC/DC theory with a background in electrical troubleshooting
Must have the ability to respond to equipment failures and vessel breakdowns 24/7 to sustain service reliability within the fleet of vessels and terminals

It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Marine Electrician or Journey-level status as a Marine Electrician
Four (4) years in marine electrical field (for work aboard vessels) and/or eight (8) years’ experience in the commercial electrical field (for work within ferry terminals).
Experience working on generators (over 200kw) and controls equipment
PLC certifications for Siemens, Allen Bradley, and ABB
Experience working with AutoCAD or equivalent drafting software
Journey Level (EL01) Washington State Labor and Industries electrical license for work on Terminals

Important Notes:
This position is required to answer a respiratory/ medical questionnaire, as required by regulatory authority, and annual fit test, which may include the requirement to be clean shaven as to obtain a skin to rubber seal.
Ability to use respiratory protection when required.
Ability to maintain a valid Washington State Driver License.
Ability to obtain (within 90 days of hire) and continuously maintain thereafter a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
This position may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing pursuant to DOT Testing requirements.
This position may be subject to pre-employment written and practical testing, congruent to trade specific skills related to the electrical field.
