The Opportunity:
WSDOT has an exciting opportunity for an experienced maintenance professional who has distinct talents in bridge maintenance to serve as Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead on the Southwest Region Bridge Crew. This experienced specialist will lead by example and have a personal commitment to safety while coordinating daily work activities including preventative and general maintenance, repairs, and inspections of bridges, structures, and highways of over 650 bridge structures throughout the region. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of goods, services, and people.

What to Expect:
This position is required to respond to emergency callouts and must be available for standby 24 hours a day/7 day a week. Work is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors, traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain; and near high-volume, high-speed traffic. This position requires the ability to work at elevated heights up to 100 feet over land and water.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead will:
- Build work schedules and assign crewmembers to the work as needed and communicate work status to supervisor.
- Train personnel in equipment usage, safety, highway maintenance, and public relations.
- Coordinate equipment and resources with the Bridge Supervisor.
- Lead a region-wide crew in performing journey-level maintenance and repairs of bridges and structures.
- Maintain and submit daily records and reports of maintenance activities, such as time, equipment, purchasing receipts, for the personnel and equipment under their jurisdiction; enter all maintenance activities into computerized systems.
- Develop preliminary cost estimates of repairs, maintenance, or alteration projects.
- Develop solutions to repair and maintenance problems.
- Perform repairs to bridge structures by placing concrete formwork and pouring concrete, repair and replace expansion joint and timber caps by steel encapsulation.
- Work on bridge bearings, drains, bridge rails, decks, piers, and other bridge components.
- Inspect and provide direction to inspect WSDOT owned structures in the Southwest Region.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repair on all types of bridge structures to ensure proper operations.
- Design and set-up of traffic control, which includes manually flagging traffic or signing for lane closures and operating attenuator/buffer truck.
- Respond to emergencies and coordinate efforts with area maintenance sheds.

Qualifications -
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- High school graduate or possession of a GED certificate.
- One (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Lead Tech, Highway maintenance Worker 3 OR two (2) years of experience as a Bridge Maintenance - Specialist 2 OR four (4) years of equivalent experience such as in bridge painting, rigging or in the maintenance of structural steel on high bridges, buildings, towers or dams.
- A Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement, without airbrake restrictions or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Experience being committed to safety including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Experience performing traffic control and a current Flagger Card or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
- Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50lbs from one location to another in safe manner.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 100 feet, over land and water.
- Skilled in the use of radio communication equipment, computers, phones, and other electronic equipment.
- Experience reading and understanding bridge construction plans for trouble shooting.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood.
- Ability to report to assigned duty station within 45 minutes or be willing to relocate to meet that response time.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Two (2) years of experience operating and performing preventative maintenance with vehicles 15,000 GVW or greater.
- Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
- Skilled in the use of radio communication equipment, computers, phones, and other electronic equipment.
- Skilled in the use computers for communicating and sending attachments, using Microsoft Office, and enter and retrieve information from WSDOT data bases such as M-PET.
- Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
- Experience reading and understanding bridge construction plans for trouble shooting.
