Yards Creek Energy LLC is a 420 MW pumped storage hydroelectric station in Blairstown NJ. It consists of three 140 MW pump turbines, an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir, and an auxiliary reservoir. During times of low power prices, the units pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, and during times of high power prices, the units generate electricity by using water from the upper reservoir, and discharge that water to the lower reservoir.
The Engineer is responsible for Plant Engineering /Project Management and providing support for Operations, Maintenance, Safety and Environmental. This position operates from established procedures, performing duties independently with only general directions and may encounter new and varied work situations involving a high degree of complexity.
Provide necessary technical support for all related work for bid specification, evaluation of vendor/contractor bid proposals, monitoring of contractor work performance to assure contract compliance, plant troubleshooting of electrical, electronic, and control equipment, programs, and issues.
Ensure site maintains PJM, FERC, NERC, Federal, State, and Local Environmental compliance requirements.
With support of IPSC corporate, oversee all EHS programs, policies and procedures necessary to achieve both compliance and the facility’s annual performance measures and long-term goals.
Tracking and monitoring of the overall health of plant equipment.
Develops, communicates, and performs work practices and procedures to keep site drawings, site procedures, alarm and setpoint changes, and Regulatory and other documentation up to date (Change Management.)
As needed performs or directs the operation of turbines, generators or other equipment as assigned; and as necessary, performs or directs the operation by manual control in case of failure of automatic controls. Observes and records readings of required indicators and/or instruments, for safe operation within prescribed limits.
While the generating/pumping unit(s) are operating, continuously observes, periodically notes, records and reports meter indications, as required by Plant Management. Any indication of trouble or other abnormal conditions affecting the system, the operations of the pump/turbines, the generators, the auxiliaries, or the operation of the plant, is to be reported to the Plant Manager.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor of Science Degree in an electrical engineering discipline with a minimum of two years related experience is preferred.
At least seven (7) years technical experience in a power generation or production environment will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science degree with at least three (3) years of directly related experience in a plant environment.
Work background must include demonstrated progressively increasing responsibilities.
Position requires a working knowledge of major health and safety regulations as well as environmental, federal, state and local rules and regulations.
Knowledge of power plant design, operations and maintenance required.
Must have general knowledge of high voltage (up to 345kV) and associated protective relaying.
Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions to be practiced in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment and machinery.
Excellent verbal and communication skills are a must, as well as skills in excel and other database programs; knowledge of, and experience with, PLCs is a plus.
Must possess basic math skills.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, ear protection, gloves, high voltage protective equipment and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties.
Work with hazardous materials may be required.
Requires working extended working hours, varied shifts or 12 hour shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. On call status (day and night) will be required.
Physical requirements include: possibility of working on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and occasionally lifting 50 pounds.
Employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post offer physical examination. No smoking is permitted within the confines of the powerhouse or office building.
Must be able to work in elevated areas, confined spaces and in extreme heat and cold conditions
