Yakima Valley College is accepting applications for the position of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioner Technician. This is a full-time, permanent, classified position; beginning salary is $4,398 per month for 40 hours per week, with periodic increments up to $5,361, plus a full state benefits package.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facility Operations, the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioner Technician is responsible for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment (HVAC) systems for assigned locations which include the performance of skilled work in diagnostic testing, repair, and maintenance of HVAC and steam distribution systems.
Installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of air handlers, air flow dampers, V belts, sheaves, pulleys, and bearings
Maintains and repairs commercial refrigeration equipment used in air conditioning, ventilation, and chilled water systems
Inspects, maintains, and repairs plumbing, heating, water, cooling, refrigeration
Analyzes and maintains control systems that include electrical, electronic, and pneumatic sensors and actuators; lay out, fabricate
Install mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic temperature and humidity controls for heating and ventilation systems
Repair relays, timers, meters, and switches with local or remote computer control
Reads and interprets blueprints
Monitors and adjusts heat and air conditioning in buildings using automated building monitoring and control systems
Operates and maintains fluid and electronic testing and measuring instruments, such as manometers, air flow and liquid flow meters, volt meters, ammeters and potentiometers
Keeps records of work performed and supplies used; use such tools as drill presses, grinders, bandsaws, hand drills, testers, welding equipment, soldering guns, small hand tools and specialized apparatus
Estimates and orders materials and supplies needed to maintain equipment in good working condition
Prepares surfaces for welding; uses arc or acetylene welding and burning equipment
May direct the work of others
Performs other work as required
Read, interpret, and update blueprints
Use automated building monitoring and control systems, estimate time and materials
Use arc and gas welding equipment
Use all types of hand and power tools
Understand and follow oral and written directions
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Direct the work of others
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in mechanical trades and HVAC work
Principles of operation of HVAC systems
Occupational hazards and safety practices of HVAC trade
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies
Journey-level standing as refrigeration mechanic or steamfitter as attested by:
a. Completion of recognized apprenticeship in refrigeration or steamfitter trades
b. Full journey-level status in Plumbers and Pipefitters Union
c. Five years of applicable experience in the refrigeration or steamfitter trades or a
combination of the two. Vocational or trade school training as a steamfitter or
refrigeration mechanic will substitute, year for year, for work experience up to a
maximum of two years
d. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for heating, ventilation, and
Experience working in an educational setting
A valid EPA refrigerant handling permit
A valid Washington State low voltage electrical license
