Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Systems Technician D to keep the electrical and electronic systems of the Hood Canal floating bridge maintained and repaired. This senior level position is the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and performs, leads, and directs diagnosis, maintenance, installation, and repairs. In this role, you will also be responsible for testing of technical monitoring and control systems and ensuring the electrical and electronic systems for the Hood Canal Bridge are operating properly. The individual in this role, must have a strong understanding of electrical code and theory. This bridge is critical to the local highway systems, business communities, and the shipping and fishing industries, and the top candidates will conduct opening and closing operations safely and effectively. Public safety and the safety of fellow employees is a high priority and must be considered in every decision and activity affecting the highway facilities.

What to Expect:
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Systems Technician will:
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of electrical and electronic systems associated with the Hood Canal floating bridge.
- Lead junior staff members in performing journey-level preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, installation, and repair.
- Perform regular inspection and testing of voltages, electrical connections, and grounding systems.
- Maintain and troubleshoot a Programmable Logic Controller system on the bridge consisting of electronic components.
- Ensure strict adherence to National Electrical Code (NEC) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC) electrical installation standards and specifications.
- Plan preventive maintenance and repair tasks.
Read, interpret, and work with complex electrical drawings, plans, manuals, and other technical documents within the electrical industry.
- Perform duties near live traffic during the day and night, either in a bucket truck, man basket or other types of lifts, at heights more than 100 feet.
Operate Class A, B, or C equipment for bridge operations.
- Design and setup traffic control for emergency operations, as well as full road or bridge closures.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the department's safety program by adhering to safety policies and procedures daily and attending safety meetings, training, and other courses.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Have a high school diploma or GED certification.
- Six (6) years of experience in the electrical construction industry, or an equivalent Traffic Signal Technician classification in another city, county, or state government.
- Possess a valid Class B CDL without air brake restrictions or the ability to obtain one within the first 6 months of hire.
- Experience working with programmable logic controllers, specifically Rockwell Automation Allen Bradley Logix5000 & Micrologix1500 Programmable Logic Controllers, ControlNet, and Panel View Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI); to include programming, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
- Experience working with Hubbell Static Reversing Motor Controllers, to include troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
- Experience with cathodic protection systems, to include troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
- Experience working with high-inertial machinery and braking components, to include troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
- Experience interpreting blueprints and schematics.
Knowledge of ethernet, fiber optic, coaxial, and microwave communication equipment.
- Knowledge of Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 33 Part 117 Drawbridge Operation Procedures and Part 118 Bridge Lighting and Other Signals.
- The ability to move and transport up to 50 pounds.
- The ability to work at heights of up to 100 feet in, around, above water on Hood Canal Bridge and over live traffic.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to report to the Hood Canal Bridge within 60 minutes for emergency callouts and bridge openings.
- The ability to be available 24-7 to workday or night in adverse weather conditions and respond to non-scheduled, call-out emergent work activities as needed.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Possession of Electrical/Electronic Licenses: ME01, EL01, EL02, EL07, CET, FOSP Cert.
- Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET).
- Associates Degree in Electronics.
