With approximately 950 dedicated staff, SDOT maintains an operational presence 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in all weather conditions to serve and ensure Seattle’s public mobility.

SDOT’s Roadway Structures Division is looking to hire a Bridge Maintenance Electrician Helper (under the City’s Electrical Maintenance Helper classification specification) to the Bridge Electrical Maintenance team. In this role, the Helper will help maintain adequate materials inventories, take appropriate materials to the job site, keep the work and storage areas clean, and locate and secure tools and equipment. This person assists the electricians with work in support of Seattle’s moveable bridges by installing, inspecting, and performing maintenance and repairs of electric lighting, heating, cooling and alarm systems, temporary power systems, CCTV monitoring systems and security systems and related facilities. The work requires a familiarity with the hand and power tools used in the electrical trades, and a knowledge of and ability to apply safety procedures. The person in this role must be able to write reports and maintain detailed records.
Job Responsibilities

Assists with routine maintenance, inspecting and cleaning of moveable span bridges, including electrical and electronic operating systems and programmable logic systems.
Assist with installation, repair, or maintenance of lighting and other system on bridges throughout the City.
Assists with repair or maintenance of electrical motors and equipment.
Assists with pulling wires, rewiring installations, and installing outlets, control devices, heaters, etc.
Assists with bending, cutting, threading, fitting, and installing conduit.
Replaces fuses and fluorescent, mercury, or incandescent lighting fixtures.
Locates, delivers, assembles, and sets up equipment, supplies and tools for project activities on work sites.
Always maintains a safe work environment, watches for hazardous conditions and unsafe procedures and alerts crew.
Sets up traffic barriers and directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic around work sites.
Cleans up work sites, trucks, and storage areas to maintain a safe work environment.
Stocks trucks and maintains supply inventories.
Completes daily logs and other working documents
Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.


Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to follow oral and written instruction, mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic hand tools, and the physical ability to lift and carry over 50 pounds.

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Desired Qualifications:

Previous experience with electrical or mechanical repairs and/or maintenance.
Experience producing written reports.
Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.
Experience reading, interpreting, and applying rules and laws associated with general and electrical work practices.
Basic math and measuring skills.
Experience organizing vehicles and worksites for projects.
Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Works at heights and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
Works around energized high voltage equipment, at heights, and in heavy traffic.


Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
