Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Field Exploration Office has an opportunity as a Driller’s Helper. This is a unique opportunity for an individual who is interested in getting into the field at an entry level. The responsibilities assigned to the position include assisting the driller and drilling inspector in advancing geotechnical borings, performing situ testing, and installing instrumentation inside the borings.

What to Expect:
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Geotechnical Drillers Helper will:
Assist the team in conducting routine subsurface testing and sampling for bridges, retaining walls, soil cuts and fills, rock slopes, and other features.
Assist in the installation of various geotechnical monitoring instrumentation.
Maintain testing equipment to ensure proper working function.
Transport testing, sampling and support equipment to and from field exploration sites.
Maintain daily records on field testing and sampling activities.
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
Ability to manipulate and carry heavy testing equipment too, from and around worksites.
Ability to safety navigate rough terrain in various weather conditions.
Ability to travel statewide with overnight stays.
Valid driver’s license.
These are non-permanent opportunities, expected to last 12 months.
These positions require between one and two weeks of travel throughout the state annually.
