Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is hiring for two experienced Welders to maintain our motor and equipment fleet located in Corson. This position is ideal for a welder/fabricator who is looking for their next career challenge which will allow them to fully utilize their valuable skills and knowledge. As a Welder, you will have the creative freedom to customize a variety of WSDOT's motor vehicles and highway maintenance equipment. The incumbent will also have essential mechanic skills to inspect and perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and maintenance equipment. This position will serve a critical role to the State of Washington in maintaining the readiness of WSDOT's vehicle and equipment fleet. If you feel you are up to the challenge, click apply!

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Welder will:
Design, fabricate, weld, and install additional equipment to vehicles such as, but not limited to rotating beacons, hydraulic systems, hitches, reinforced bumpers, brackets, guards, etc.
Painting of equipment such as plows, sanders, and truck beds.
Repair, overhaul, maintain and in some situations design equipment used in maintenance and construction of roadways
Troubleshoot and repair all electrical systems. Replacing components related to electronic fuel injection, automotive computer controls, ignition, anti-lock brakes, sequential sign boards, and various other electronic systems.
Review vehicle history and draft work orders. Oder parts as necessary for repair.
Attend trainings and other types of meetings as required.
Perform basic and routine shop maintenance.
Proficient working with various materials including but not limited to aluminum, stainless steel, steel, brass, etc.
Proficient with all shop equipment such as but not limited to welders, drill press, plasma cutter, bandsaw, iron worker, press brake, and shear.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED
Three (3) years of experience as a welder, fabricator, or millwright OR Have completed a recognized Welding/Fabricating apprenticeship program AND one of the following requirements below:
Two (2) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a Journey-Level Mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship
One (1) year of experience as a Journey-Level Mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy duty equipment.
Journey-Level standing as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship.
Current CDL Class A with endorsement N without Air Brake Restrictions and current CDL Medical Examiners Certificate or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
Ability to lift and safely move objects weighing in excess of 50lbs.
Ability to stand stationary for period up to 30 minutes at a time and alternate between standing and walking up to 10 hours per work shift.
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written.

Preferred Qualifications:
Successful completion of vocational technical training in welding/fabricating, heavy equipment, light vehicles and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair.
Recognized welding certification such as WABO, etc.
Experience operating metal machining tools and/or equipment.
