The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Traffic Management Center Technician 3 Lead (Transportation Technician 3) to perform advanced traffic management activities in the Northwest Region Traffic Management Center (TMC). This critical role supports WSDOT's mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options while operating intelligent transportation systems. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Traffic Management Center Technician 3 Lead will:

Coordinate training and resources for TMC employees, including conducting training sessions on various topics.
Prepare and maintain training materials derived from standard operating procedures.
Conduct continuing education and provide remedial materials as needed.
Maintain TMC Technician schedule and voluntary call-out documentation.
Perform data retrieval, analysis, and reporting of traffic and tolling data to support operations and engineering studies.
Collect and review operation data, system logs, and control information for internal and external reporting purposes.
Monitor and verify toll rates and information displayed within the I-405 Express Toll system.
Operate tunnel control systems and supervise fire life safety systems utilizing various detection systems.
Coordinate incident response with emergency responders, maintenance crews, and external agencies.
Monitor dynamic speed reduction systems and respond to incidents or closures with appropriate traffic control measures.
Use traffic management software and incident detection systems to monitor traffic, communicate with field crews, and coordinate with various agencies.


Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent.

OR

A bachelor’s degree in engineering.

OR

Certification as an Engineer-in-Training.


In addition to the following:

Possession of a valid Driver’s License.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong understanding of computer operation.
Experience training staff members with varying knowledge and backgrounds.
Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays. Must respond to TMC within 1 hour while on-call. Passdown is required for all shifts.
Ability to conduct occasional field site visits. Hazards on construction sites or in tunnels include uneven terrain and adverse weather.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:

Prior operation of mission-critical software suites, response to emergency situations, and/or previous transportation experience.
Working knowledge of data collection, analysis, and reporting practices and principles – the ability to analyze and summarize data to create actionable reports for traffic and tolling operations.
Experience working in a major metropolitan TMC.
Working knowledge of freeway management practices and principles - the ability to make operational assessments of freeway flow conditions and derive traffic management strategies and tactics on the fly.
Detailed knowledge of tunnel environmental systems operations and procedures.
Experience reading, comprehending, and verifying contract plans and specifications, including traffic control plans.

The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% premium for TMC positions located in Shoreline, WA, King County.

This position is not eligible for remote work.
